SUMMARY:PAMM: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 9th from 10am – 6pm experience the opening of ‘On the Horizon: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection’ at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. This exhibition explores the diverse cultural and emotional landscapes of recent Cuban Art. It presents a selection of works by Contemporary Cuban artists donated to the museum by Jorge M. Pérez\, the majority from a recent gift of over 160 pieces\, as well as works previously gifted to PAMM in 2012\, and several recent acquisitions. The selection includes multiple images of the horizon\, and these works serve to structure the conceptual framework of the exhibition. The diverse meanings placed on the horizon—which include it as a symbol of longing\, containment or desire—radiate across the additional works on view. Exhibition runs from June 9th\, 2017 through April 8th\, 2018.\nImage: Juan Carlos Alom\, Nacidos para ser libres (Born to be free)\, 2012 (detail). Collection Pérez Art Museum Miami\, gift of Jorge M. SUMMARY:Wolfsonian-FIU Open House: North and South
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 9th from 10am-9pm\, enjoy The Wolfsonian’s newest shows\, North and South: Berenice Abbott’s U.S. Route 1 and its contemporary complement The Long Road to Now! The day includes free admission\, happy hour specials in the Wolf Café after 4pm\, and tours (beginning at 2pm and 6pm) led by assistant curator Whitney Richardson. Free and open to the public.\nNorth and South: Berenice Abbott’s U.S. Route 1\nIn 1954\, photographer Berenice Abbott journeyed along the length of U.S. Route 1\, capturing the road\, its towns\, and inhabitants. From Florida motels made from buses to Maine potato farmers\, Abbott memorialized communities up and down the East Coast. During the trip\, Abbott shot more than four hundred 8×10-inch photographs\, and over two thousand smaller images using her Rolleiflex camera\, representing her largest portfolio of photographs devoted to a single subject. North and South will bring together a selection of 50 works from this series to present a singular visual summary of American life during the mid-1950s. The exhibition is organized by the Syracuse University Art Collection and presented in tandem with The Long Road to Now: Digital Photos Inspired by Berenice Abbott’s Road Trip\, an installation of contemporary photography developed in partnership with Instagram forum #JJCommunity. #route1photos
