This 1.5 to 2-hour walking tour provides an introduction to the Art Deco\, Mediterranean Revival\, and Miami Modern (MiMo) styles found within the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. Explore hotels\, restaurants\, and other commercial structures with a visit to a number of interiors. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, September 2nd from 6 – 8pm the Coral Gables Museum presents Link + Learn: Preserving Culture and Places\, a moderated\, Q&A-style panel discussion featuring renowned names in urban planning\, city development\, cultural preservation\, photography\, and historic documentation. The panelists for the evening are Megan McLaughlin of PlusUrbia\, Rodolfo Pou of Diaspora & Development\, and photographer Steven Brooke. The Allapattah CDC has prepared 5 questions focused on historic and cultural preservation for each panelist to respond to\, and the museum will offer light bites and bar service for attendees to enjoy. This Event is FREE & Open to the Public | RSVP HERE. \nMiami’s diverse diasporic populations have shaped South Florida’s cultural identity\, economy\, and neighborhoods by establishing resourceful communities and businesses from the ground up\, as well as institutions that integrate unique legacies of the past into the present. \nGuided by a desire for new beginnings in a land rooted in migration and opportunity\, these communities contribute layers to our historic neighborhoods\, giving us an honest tale of Miami as a city. However\, in Miami’s ever-changing landscape\, these unique communities face new challenges. \nToday\, rising rents caused by rapid development threaten historic neighborhoods with displacement of their existing residents and\, by extension\, cultural erasure. With urban development and revitalization projects in culturally rich historic neighborhoods\, a key question remains: how can development be pursued while staying affordable for existing residents and preserving the heritage embedded in these communities’ infrastructure? Organizations like the Allapattah CDC address this point of concern\, with specific focus on Little Santo Domingo which– the home of Miami’s Dominican community. \nOrganized by the Allapattah CDC in light of their collaborative effort with the Smithsonian Institution and Florida Humanities to realize the Many Voices\, One Nation En Nuestra Palabras exhibition which features the history and voices of Miami communities\, the Coral Gables museum will host a special edition of our Link + Learn event aimed at discussing how we can preserve the many voices\, places\, and people that make up the Magic City. \n
