Experience a special performance featuting live jazz\, original lyrics\, rare archival footage about one of Miami’s most celebrated painters from 1970-90’s. This Event is Free & Open to the Public\, RSVP HERE. \nInspired by the life of Purvis Young (1943–2010) the self-taught artist whose work chronicled the people\, struggles and spirit of Miami’s Overtown neighborhood in his paintings\, Othello of Overtown explores Young’s artistic journey\, his relationship with community\, and the tensions between creative expression and the commercial art world. \nA special preview of the new production is happening during July\, the monthly First Free Thursday at NSU Art Museum\, many events are free and open to the public including this matinee performance in the Norma and William Horvitz Auditorium. \nThe play was written by Miami-born playwright\, director and actor Sefanja Richard Galon. The director is Carey Brianna Hart\, a New World School of the Arts and Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University graduate whose South Florida theater work spans stage\, backstage\, directing and radio arts and President of the South Florida Theatre League. \nEnjoy lunch and a coffee in the cafe and join us for the reading of about one hour with a conversation with the playwright\, director and cast afterwards.

Create a meaningful\, decorative textile wall hanging with internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist Cheryl Pope. \nIn this two-day workshop\, explore the special exhibition\, Get in the Game: Sports\, Art\, Culture\, to discover how artists use traditional sports banners\, pennants\, flags\, and fashion to express powerful ideas—including Pope’s own letter jacket artwork. These artworks will inspire the creation of our own stitched statements. \nIn the studio\, we’ll reflect on language and writing before designing and preparing felt lettering on banner backings. Using simple appliqué and hand-stitching techniques\, we’ll bring our words to life. The result—bold\, meaningful banners with motivational messages about everyday life\, personal reflections\, social justice\, or simply for fun! \n  \nThis workshop is for participants ages 14+. Free with museum admission. Admission is $18 for adults and free for members.\n
