SUMMARY:Emerson Dorsch: A Conversation with Karen Rifas and Dale Andree
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 11th at 6pm join us at Emerson Dorsch for a conversation between artist Karen Rifas and dancer Dale Andree\, who have been collaborating for many years. Between them they have created a language of form that communicates the “order of things” in relation to space. Andree brings Rifas’ material works to life\, choreographing bodies that use force to literally move her sculptures\, reshaping\, re-imagining the space they inhabit.\nDuring the opening of Per Forms\, Andree along with dancers Mary Spring\, Elaine Wright\, and drummer Pablo Pena activated the sculptural installation entitled Pro Forms. The title invokes different readings\, but the idea of being “pro-active” comes to mind. The work required attentive viewership as dancers moved around and through the crowd\, freeze framing their bodies into almost objects. Not quite sublimating their breath\, they would meander for a while stop\, pose\, and reposition slowly until they met in the center. Their gazes never crossed. Their eyes were locked on infinity. The audience slowly got quieter. The drummer started a rhythm with his hands and the group came together\, meeting on the floor space of the installation. By then they were moving more intentionally in sequence and the audience fell completely silent. They suddenly forced two benches that were part of the display away from each other. Together they broke the silence that had fallen across the room\, and divided the dense crowd as Moses parted the Red Sea.

SUMMARY:Local Views at PAMM: Ya La'Ford
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 26th from 6:30-7pm join us at the Pérez Art Museum Miami for their in-gallery tour program\, Local Views at PAMM\, where select local artists will speak about 3-5 works of art currently on view at the museum. This month\, artist Ya La’Ford will lead the tour\, known for site-specific installations of her bold\, geometric paintings. She builds each work with a unique vocabulary of intersecting lines and gestural repetition. Her labyrinth patterns are both an exploration of self and place\, as well as a reflection of her Jamaican background.\nUnlike our traditional academic discussions\, Local Views at PAMM gives visitors a first-hand interaction with local artists by creating conversations centered around art and the creative process. This casual 30-minute conversation is offered on the fourth Thursday of each month.\nImage: Ya La’Ford. Photo courtesy Ya La’Ford.

SUMMARY:The Bass is Back! Reopens October 29th
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 29th from 10am-5pm The Bass is due to reopen to the public after a $12m restructuring. Guests will enjoy a nearly 50 percent increase in programmable space\, consisting of four new galleries\, a museum store\, a café catered by Thierry Isambert\, and the Creativity Center\, a newly formed education facility to better serve expanded programs and increased attendance. As a special thank you and to commemorate this momentous occasion\, admission will be FREE at the museum throughout opening day.\nThe inaugural show Beautiful is on view until April 2nd\, 2018 by the Ghent-based Cameroonian artist Pascale Mathine Tayou\, who works in multiple media and addresses themes such as colonialism. Extant works back to 2006 will join the new Bass commission Welcome Wall (2017)\, a site-specific LED work that shows the word “welcome” in 70 languages. Tayou has selected works from the museum’s collection to dialogue with his pieces. Two other solo exhibitions will also kick off the reopened museum’s program. The Argentina-born\, New York-based artist Mika Rottenberg will show video works that incorporate mixed-media installations\, such as the humorous NoNoseKnows (2015)\, which made a splash at the 2015 Venice Biennale\, and the multi-media work Ponytails (2014)\, mechanized\, synthetic versions of the perky hairstyle wiggling on a wall. Exhibition is on view until April 30th\, 2018. The entire second floor will be taken over by the main re-opening exhibition\, the Switzerland-born\, New York-based artist Ugo Rondinone’s good evening beautiful blue\, on view until February 19th\, 2018. This exhibition will include works like his foam and resin clowns\, vocabulary of solitude (2014) and the colorful mirror work clockwork for oracles II (2008). Rondinone’s Miami Mountain (2016) was acquired by the Bass in 2016 as part of the museum’s ten-year acquisition initiative\, launched in September 2016.\nImage: Ugo Rondinone\, Vocabulary of Solitude\, 2016.
