SUMMARY:BREACH presents "Middle Aged Mutants" Matija Bobicic
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 15th from 11am – 8pm experience the Opening of BREACH gallery’s exhibition by Matija Bobicic\, “Middle Aged Mutants” – on view through February 12\, 2022. \nSlovenia-born artist Matija Bobicic\, presents paintings with unrestrained and untamed imaginative forethought\, employing mutated reflections of sci-fi and fantasy paradigms from his youth\, Bobicic grapples with the filtering of American culture into post-Yugoslav Slovenia in the 1990’s. Rooted within both nostalgia and an uneasy prophecy of our future\, Bobicic’s work plays with the barely recognizable faces and symbols of decades past to create figures that personify the chaotic amalgamation of pop culture in our modern times. \n  \nImage: MATIJA BOBIČIĆ\, “Mice are from Mars and Clowns are from Earth”\, acrylic on canvas\, 51 x 40 in. SUMMARY:ICA Miami presents ICA Speaks with artist Ellen Lesperance
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 20th at 7pm ICA Miami for a virtual conversation with artist Ellen Lesperance\, who will discuss how protest-based material culture influences her work and specifically how the paintings and knit sculptures on view at ICA Miami connect to historical periods of feminist activism. This is a FREE Event\, Open to the Public / RSVP HERE. \nICA Miami welcomes Ellen Lesperance\, whose exhibition “Amazonknights” is currently on view at the museum\, to ICA Speaks. Ellen Lesperance will discuss her engagement with feminist activism through her painting practice. Rendered in gouache on paper\, the artist uses the visual language of universal knitting shorthand to document and potentially recreate historic garments worn by women activists\, warriors\, and cultural figures. For the past decade\, one important focus of the artist’s work has been archiving protest knitwear worn by the separatist feminists of the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp who demonstrated against U.S. nuclear weapons storage in Berkshire\, England\, from 1981 to 2000. In 2020\, Lesperance published a book of this archive titled Velvet Fist. For ICA Speaks\, Lesperance will discuss how this protest-based material culture influences her work and specifically how the paintings and knit sculptures in her solo exhibition “Amazonknights” relate to these histories.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, January 23rd\, 2 – 5pm the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts presents the Florida Grand Opera: A Streetcar Named Desire. Stella!”… The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the title A Streetcar Named Desire. However\, rest assured that André Previn’s operatic adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ famous play will leave with you with so much more. The opera follows the downward spiral of former southern belle Blanche Dubois\, who after having experienced a series of personal losses\, leaves behind her wealth and privilege and moves into a run-down apartment with her sister and brother-in-law. Filled with soaring melodies and an orchestral score that puts you right in the middle of New Orleans during a hot summer\, A Streetcar Named Desire is a contemporary verismo masterpiece.
