SUMMARY:ICA Miami presents Lucy Raven: Twentieth Century Lights
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 8th at 2pm join us at the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Miami when artist\, filmmaker and S-V-A graduate professor Lucy Raven will discuss the illuminating legacy of searchlights in 20th century film\, war\, and the media. As part of the Art + Research Center’s Spring 2017 Semester\, “New Social Abstractions\,” artist and filmmaker Lucy Raven will deliver a new public lecture\, “20th Century Lights\,” at ICA Miami. To learn more\, or enroll in workshops conducted by Lucy Raven\, please visit icamiami.org/arc. This talk will explore a legacy of searchlights in the 20th century—in cinema\, in war\, and in media fanfare. This event will take place at Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library – Second Floor\, Cotilla Gallery. \nEnjoy Holstad’s exhibition on view at NSU\, Cult of Personality. Christian Holstad (born 1972\, California) is an American artist based in Brooklyn\, New York. He received his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1994. Holstad’s practice reflects an interest in crafts\, handmade objects\, textiles\, and an appreciation for American culture and history. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 8th from 2-5pm the public is invited to participate in #SORRYNOTSORRY at NSU Art Museum\, an interactive performance piece by conceptual artist Allison Bolah. Informed by the act of game play\, #SORRYNOTSORRY is Bolah’s second performance work presented at NSU Art Museum. In her interdisciplinary practice\, she has created installations that document the ways gesture and language are shaped into specific narratives. With a focus on the human drive to build complete narratives out of tiny bits of information\, she aims to draw awareness to reliance on absent information and non-verbal communication in creating and understanding narratives.\nThis event is Free with museum admission. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 8th from 6-10pm enjoy the Opening Reception of Word Play at Laundromat Art Space\, a group exhibition of new works featuring art from Elysa D Batista\, JC Rodriguez and Ronald Sanchez. In celebration of National Poetry Month\, all three featured artists will be showcasing text-based art in the exhibition. In ‘Word Play’ the artists seek to find witty and engaging ways of taking the written word to a new level. Words and phrases will come to life in various mediums including sculptural artworks (in steel\, paper\, plexi and wood)\, painting\, as well as video installations. The exhibition runs through April 29th.
