SUMMARY:NSU Art Museum: Conversations with Collectors

The season kicks off with a discussion on the phenomenon of art hotels moderated by NSU Art Museum’s Director Bonnie Clearwater. Meet three visionary collectors who revolutionized this concept.\nCurator of the Cricket Taplin Collection\, Cricket Taplin and her late husband Martin reopened Miami Beach’s iconic Sagamore Hotel in 2001 after a major restoration and re-conceptualized it as one of the country’s first boutique art hotels. With a notable collection of contemporary art by emerging and established artists\, The Sagamore became a successful model for hotels across the country.\nSuzi Cordish and her husband David\, established The Cordish Art Collection\, which debuted in 2018 at their luxury LIVE! Hotel in Maryland. As the collection’s curator\, she spent over three years commissioning or selecting art by international and local artists who include Andy Warhol\, Sylvy Fleury\, Nick Cave\, Not Vital\, Jennifer Steinkamp\, Chul Hyun Ahn\, and others.\nLesley Goldwasser and her family own and operate The Betsy-South Beach\, a boutique luxury hotel\, located in Miami Beach\, known for its community-based philanthropic work\, and commitment to arts and culture. SUMMARY:Dimensions Variable: Entering Sacred Grounds— Charo Oquet
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 25th from 6-10pm experience the solo project of artist Charo Oquet at Dimensions Variable (DV). Artist Charo Oquet will be creating an immersive installation in the main gallery space that will be activated by two performances and a conversation.\nAlthough its production began in late 2018\, This project has been in gestation since 2011\, when the research for this first audiovisual work started. This project melds installation\, image\, and movement with voices that addresses critical issues of contemporary Dominican immigrant and queer culture to explore issues of immigration and social injustices reflecting the current cultural\, social\, and political realities and the tenuous line between memory\, and reality through narratives that unfold within a landscape.\nThe immersive installation explores concepts of sacred spaces and spiritual encounters. It creates an ambiguous and safe space where fictional and documentary dimensions are blended\, creating a third territory of language. The installation will include works that imply that they are markers of energy that have become the conduits of energy. Like chakra stones that mark the radiation of energy within the earth or the body. It includes pieces from research into the origins of magic writing such as veves and the endeavor to unite abstraction with mythical concepts. It will highlight the multidimensional character of rituals and politics.
