SUMMARY:Frost Art Museum presents Otros Lados: Itzel Basualdo\, Hugo Crosthwaite\, and Judithe Hernández
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 22nd from 1-7pm the Frost Art Museum presents the opening of the exhibition Al otro lado\, curated by Amy Galpin\, Ph.D.\, Chief Curator and Maryanna Ramirez\, Manager of Strategic Initiatives. ‘Al otro lado’ is a phrase used in Mexico to describe areas of the United States populated by Mexican immigrants. The fluid nature of migration\, exile\, labor\, and cultural exchanges between Mexico and the U.S.\, resonate in the daily lives of people in both countries.\nThe art produced by Mexican and Mexican American artists in the U.S. has a long history as many parts of the Southwestern portion of the U.S. were formally Mexico. Too often Mexican American artists have been left outside of canonical readings of American art; each artist in this exhibition expands traditional notions of what it means to be an American artist today. Otros Lados: Itzel Basualdo\, Hugo Crosthwaite\, and Judithe Hernández brings together three generations of artists who are deeply informed by Mexican and Mexican American experiences from the other side.\nThis exhibition is on view Saturday\, August 22\, 2020 — Sunday\, December 13\, 2020.\n  \nImage: Judithe Hernández\, Dreams Between the Earth and Sky\, 2018\, pastel on paper\, 30 x 90 inches. SUMMARY:Frost Art Museum presents House to House: Women\, Politics\, and Place
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 26th from 5 – 6pm enjoy the opening of ‘House to House: Women\, Politics\, and Place‘ at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum. In celebration of the ratification of the 19th amendment\, House to House: Women\, Politics\, and Place examines the metaphor of two houses: the domestic space women have dominated and the public\, political space where their voices are increasingly heard. On August 18\, 1920\, women in the United States gained the right to vote. A century later\, women’s access to equity in the social and political sphere continues to be at the forefront of the popular consciousness\, especially with the increasing visibility of women as political leaders. Varied spaces where women have exercised agency from domestic spaces to beauty salons\, factories and courtrooms\, will be illustrated. This multimedia exhibition includes work by Aurora Molina\, Catherine Opie\, Martha Rosler\, Laurie Simmons\, Mickalene Thomas\, and Deborah Willis\, among others.\nOn View:\nSaturday\, September 26\, 2020 — Sunday\, January 3\, 2021\nCurated By:\nAmy Galpin\, Ph.D.\, Chief Curator\n\n  \nImage: Image caption: Wendy Red Star\, Apsáalooke Feminist #4\, 2016\, photo print\, 35 x 42 inches\, courtesy of Wendy Red Star

SUMMARY:ArtLab @ the Lowe: 11 Intervisual Cubans
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 27th from 5:30 – 6:30pm the Lowe Art Museum presents ArtLab @ the Lowe: 11 Intervisual Cubans. 11 Intervisual Cubans is an exhibition curated by students who were enrolled in ARH 511\, SPA 360\, LAS 302\, and LAS 602: ArtLab @ The Lowe during the Spring 2020 semester. This curatorial studies seminar provides students with the unique opportunity to organize an exhibition annually\, based on a theme related to the expertise of that year’s instructor. This year’s focus was on Cuban visual artists who were also scenic designers. The University of Miami students curated the online exhibition with Dr. Lillian Manzor\, Associate Professor of Modern Languages and Literature and Founding Director\, Cuban Theater Digital Archive.\nThis event is free for Members. Non-Member/General Admission registrants are kindly asked to consider paying a suggested fee of $5 in support of future Lowe programming. In the light of the current crisis gripping our country and our world\, the museum affirms its commitment to our community by making this fee entirely discretionary. RSVP here.\n  \n
