SUMMARY:Vizcaya Museum & Gardens presents 'Wish Towers' Art Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, November 9th from 7 – 9pm you are cordially invited to the Opening Reception of ‘Wish Towers’ at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. Join the museum for the relaunching of the Contemporary Art Program and the opening of ‘Wish Towers’ by Javier and Jaime Suárez. \n‘Wish Towers’ marks the return of the Contemporary Arts Program. Inspired by the native coral limestone that was used extensively in the creation of the gardens\, Jaime and Javier Suárez explore how art and nature intersect at Vizcaya. They have created a modular sculpture made of fossilized coral collected from Puerto Rico’s shores. \nThe sun-bleached coral is turned into unique pieces that link together creating vertical structures\, described by the artists as stalagmites. Functioning as a nurturing vessel for mangrove propagules that can be watered with public participation\, Jaime and Javier’s installation responds to the ongoing challenges posed by climate change\, including sea level rise and increases in seawater temperature\, and thus honoring Vizcaya’s commitment to environmental sustainability. \nTHE OPENING RECEPTION \nThroughout the evening\, explore the installation\, see a behind-the-scenes video of the artists creating the piece and learn a little bit more about the Contemporary Arts Program. \nAt 7:30pm\, join Curator Helena Gomez and artists Jaime and Javier Suárez for an informal conversation about ‘Wish Towers’ and the artistic process. \nTICKETS \nGeneral admission\, $5 / Members Free / RSVP HERE.

SUMMARY:Castanier Gallery presents MIRAGE: Jan Kaláb
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 27th from 11am – 5pm experience the Opening Reception of MIRAGE at Castanier Gallery\, a solo exhibition for contemporary Czech artist\, Jan Kaláb. His show will take place during Miami’s Art Basel week and will commence with two events. The exhibition will open on Sunday\, November 27th with an all-day reception\, and on Thursday\, December 1st\, the gallery will present a Miami Basel party with the presence of the artist. This is the fourth solo exhibition for Jan Kaláb at the gallery\, which will highlight a collection of new paintings. Exhibition is on view November 27th\, 2022 through January 7\, 2023. \nJan Kaláb introduces a meticulous study of color to the sweeping geometry of his canvases for this exhibition. From multi-dimensional pieces that curve organically beyond their boundaries to visual arrays of shapes that create fields of chromatic harmony\, Kaláb’s work plays with ideas of perception and the fluidity of what we see as real. Many of his paintings\, through the masterful application of color gradient\, present illusions to the eye. Incorporating sculptural elements\, such as oblong and/or protruding canvases\, the artist creates pieces that have no clear definition. One’s perspective of the piece changes with every different angle\, thus no one’s view of the paintings can be the same. \n  \nImage: Jan Kaláb\, “Melted Sahara Dawn #2” acrylic on canvas\, 35 x 51 x 6 in. SUMMARY:Locust Projects: Miami Art Week Meet the Artists Reception
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, November 29th from 7 – 9pm Locust Projects invites you to meet the artists and curators at the reception during Miami Art Week for their last three exhibitions in Locust Projects’ Design District space before they move to Little River. \nABOUT THE SHOWS: \nMain Gallery: ule ole allez\, a major new installation by Ecuador-born/New York City–based artist Ronny Quevedo created in collaboration with local futsal (aka football) players. The work draws parallels between movement in sports activities and migration over local and international borders and the ever-changing rules immigrants face. \nProject Room: Room for the Living/Room for the Dead\, a new installation by Miami-based artist T. Eliott Mansa. The artist will build an immersive recreation of a room referencing the architecture of sunken ‘living rooms’\, popular in the 1970s that children and guests were not allowed to use. Mansa’s assemblage\, paintings\, and sculptures incorporate found materials in a way that subverts their original intent\, reimagining them as apotropaic objects. His work incorporates the aesthetic of amalgamation found in grassroot roadside memorials\, visionary Southern vernacular sculpture\, and the West African practices of nkisi nkondi and bocio sculpture making. Mansa’s intention is to trigger the radical imagination of viewers\, encouraging them to subvert the status quo and find socio-political agency in their own communities. \nScreening Room: Portals of Introspection\, a selection of video works guest curated by Donnamarie Baptiste featuring works by Mikey Please\, Duke Riley and Paul Ward. \n“Often used to refer to internal self-awareness\, or looking inward\, the word introspection evokes varying thoughts and feelings among individuals depending on their experiences and emotions. The selected films reveal different journeys of introspection used to accomplish a desired outcome. When one is truly passionate\, what seems complicated can become simple\, and the mundane can become extraordinary. Highlighting connections between humans and our environment\, artistic desire and how we navigate through life each day\, this collection of films delves deeply to understand our engagement and place in the world.” \n–Donnamarie Baptiste\, guest curator
