SUMMARY:Amadlozi Gallery presents Afri-Facture in the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center celebrating Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 11th from 4-8pm you are cordially invited to the Amadlozi Gallery at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center\, celebrating Black History Month with the eye-popping Afri-Facture exhibition. Mix and mingle with some of South Florida’s major fans of visual art and culture while exploring the motivated common themes behind collecting African artifacts\, sculptures\, paintings and more. \nThe contemporary Black Atlantic visual art experience is deeply rooted in African culture. The pieces chosen for this exhibit exemplify those connections and personify\, in part\, manifestations of African retentions. Extensive anthropological research have been done on the connection between African indigenous culture and the Black Atlantic. Scholars have proved that customs\, diet\, ….inevitably has a direct link between the Motherland and wherever we are in the new world. \nThe exhibition features artworks from the following collections: \nKay Crawford Collection \nAfri-Kin Collective \nMiami MoCAAD \nAmadlozi Gallery Collection \nFeatured artists include selected works by Purvis Young\, Jouons Sang D’Oeuf\, Angele Etoundi Essamba\, Ras Mosera\, Rene Pena\, Marjaries Marmolejos\, A-Guy and Joshua Duron. The exhibition is curated by Bayunga Kialeuka and Joanne Hampstead. \nFor More Info Call the Center at: (305) 638-6771 or email: info@AHCACMiami.org.

SUMMARY:University of Miami Gallery in Wynwood presents The Precipice Photographs by Tony Chirinos
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 11th from  6 – 9pm The University of Miami is pleased to present a reception for artist Tony Chironos’ The Precipice\, an exhibition of photographs from Tony Chirinos’ first monograph\, The Precipice. Chirinos has had a long and rich photographic career spanning more than 40 years. Mr. Chirinos is a Miami-based photographer that explores the themes of death and the vulnerability of life. On view: February 1 – 24\, 2023. \nThe Precipice is the summation of nearly two decades spent working as a biomedical photographer in Miami. Chirinos threads the needle between the sometimes delicate\, often brutal world of surgical intervention. The exhibition contains images from three main bodies: surgical photographs of living subjects; vibrant typologies of exquisitely photographed tools; and the journey to the afterlife. The Precipice draws back the curtain to a world which most of us never see\, where human fragility and resilience coexist in an uneasy equilibrium.

SUMMARY:Talks: Jerry Saltz
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, February 15th from 7-9pm Locust Projects + Oolite Arts present ‘Talks‘ at the Little Haiti Cultural Center for a conversation with with Jerry Saltz\, Senior Art Critic for New York magazine. This Event is Free & Open to the Public. RSVP HERE. \n  \nAbout the Speaker:\nJerry Saltz is the Senior Art Critic for New York magazine\, where he writes about the constantly shifting dynamics of the art world\, from up-and-coming artists to billionaire collectors to the role of criticism. Hailed as a “critic of the people” by Architectural Digest\, he democratizes art for a broad audience through his irreverent column and his social media channels\, where he has nearly one million followers. In 2018\, he won the Pulitzer Prize in Criticism for “My Life as a Failed Artist\,” an essay about how his disappointing career as an artist is responsible for his success as a critic.\nSaltz’s viral New York cover story\, “How to Be an Artist\,” sold nearly 400\,000 print editions of the magazine and gained over 250\,000 readers online\, ultimately earning a National Magazine Award. In this daring to-do list for aspiring creatives\, Saltz shared answers to the questions artists ask the most: “How do I get started? How do I get better? And is this even art at all?” Jerry Saltz’s book\, also entitled How to Be an Artist\, expands on his prize-winning piece with dozens of brand new guidelines\, exercises\, prompts\, and tips designed to help artists do what they do best—create. In his entertaining lectures\, he dispenses valuable advice for amateurs and professionals alike\, along with a sharp analysis of the role of criticism in the art world today.\nJerry Saltz has been a columnist for New York magazine since 2007. Formerly\, he was the senior art critic for The Village Voice for almost ten years\, where he was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. A frequent guest lecturer\, he has spoken at the Museum of Modern Art\, the Guggenheim\, the Whitney Museum\, and many others\, and has appeared at Harvard\, Yale\, Columbia\, the Rhode Island School of Design\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, and elsewhere. He has also contributed to Art in America\, Flash Art International\, Frieze\, and Modern Painters\, among other publications. He was the sole advisor for the 1995 Whitney Bienniel. In 2007\, he received the Frank Jewett Mather Award for art criticism. Jerry Saltz has received honorary doctorates from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Kansas City Art Institute. He was born and raised in Chicago and now lives in New York City.
