DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, March 22nd from 3 – 4pm the Boca Raton Museum of Art presents Renaissance Art Conversations – “A man within a woman”: Vittoria Colonna and Michelangelo’s Friendship. \nMichelangelo met the noble widow and poet Vittoria Colonna sometime in the late 1530s in Rome. An intense spiritual and intellectual relationship blossomed between the unlikely pair as they exchanged letters\, sonnets\, and drawings for nearly a decade until Colonna’s death in 1547. This talk will explore their relationship and the works of art that resulted from it as Michelangelo sought to honor the friend he called “A man within a woman.” \nDr. Emily Fenichel is Associate Professor of Art History at Florida Atlantic University. She is the author of Michelangelo’s Art of Devotion in the Age of Reform\, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 2023. She has also published articles on various aspects of Michelangelo’s life and career\, from the Pietà to the artist’s portrait medal.
