SUMMARY:The Bakehouse Art Complex presents Urban Steeling
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 5th from 7-10pm join us at the Bakehouse Art Complex for Urban Steeling\, the last exhibition of the Baked-in-House series for the 2017/2018 season in the Swenson Gallery\, featuring artists Scott Brennan and Ralph Provisero. Curated by Ombretta Agró Andruff\, Urban Steeling celebrates Miami’s deeply urban\, gritty side\, the “anti-tropical paradise” look that is rarely brought under the spotlight. The exhibition is on view through June 24\, 2018.\nAway from the pristine beaches\, blue skies and swaying palm trees of Miami Beach\, and the glass and steel skyscrapers that give Brickell its futuristic look\, Urban Steeling pays homage to a side of Miami that is often ignored and yet is crucial to the identity of our multifaceted city. Bakehouse artist Scott Brennan’s photography builds on the legacy of urban photography legends such as Eugene Atget\, Brassai and Lee Friedlander\, whose work focused on landscapes\, urban and not\, with an almost complete absence of human presence. On the atrium wall\, Brennan’s Dead Pay Phone series documents these urban “archeological” relics: for years a critical means of communication\, they became obsolete soon after the advent of cheap mobile phones; now\, too expensive to remove\, they populate the streets of metropolises around the globe\, a stern reminder of the pace of technology in our contemporary world. Inside the Swenson Gallery\, images of parking garages\, empty lots with the occasional street sign or lamp post\, chain-link fences and abandoned cars enter in a fascinating dialogue with the steel and bronze sculptures of Ralph Provisero.

SUMMARY:ArtCenter/South Florida presents 'Between a view and a milestone'
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 10th from 7-9pm join us at ArtCenter/South Florida for the opening reception of Between a view and a milestone\, an exhibition featuring works by resident artists\, curated by Angelica Arbelaez. Enjoy cocktails and music by DJ Josh August. Free and open to the public\, RSVP here. Exhibition runs through July 8\, 2018.\nBetween a view and a milestone presents works by ArtCenter/South Florida’s studio residents that offer contemplative meditations on place. While place can imply a certain level of geographic specificity\, determining placehood can be difficult and requires certain physical and intangible elements to make it so. The exhibition’s title refers to a visual device used in landscape painting\, in which the painter includes an object in the foreground as a means of framing the view of the landscape. Places call for this sort of demarcation\, but they also call for a more emotive connection that is highly dependent upon the individual occupying it. Places are felt as much as they are physically constructed. Participating artists: Adler Guerrier\, Alba Triana\, Anastasia Samoylova\, Elite Kedan\, GeoVanna Gonzalez\, Jamilah Sabur\, Jillian Mayer\, Joshua Veasey\, Juan Pablo Garza\, Laura Marsh\, Leo Castaneda\, Morel Doucet\, Terence Price II and Tom Scicluna.

SUMMARY:University of Miami Gallery presents Anna Meier: Outsider
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 12th from 6-9pm join us for the opening reception of a Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Anna Meier at the University of Miami Art Gallery in Wynwood. The University of Miami presents Outsider\, a community-based project that draws on the complex history of Miami and focuses on the social and racial structures within the city’s different neighborhoods. Using natural materials gathered from the streets of Miami\, artist Anna Meier has created ten wearable sculptures or body-scapes\, each representing a different neighborhood in the city. She then returns to each neighborhood with the completed bodyscape and asks a passerby to take her photograph.\nOutsider will feature these wearable sculptures and the 10 photographs of them taken in different locations around the city by different community members. The intention behind this work\, is to explore and test the boundaries of racial\, social\, and class divides within Miami by inverting the traditional roles of subject and photographer\, and to stimulate a dialogue about how race relations in Miami and the country can be improved. The work featured in Outsider is strange\, eerie\, and a little silly\, a reminder that laughter is often the best way to break down barriers. Outsider will be on view from May 8 – 27\, 2018.\nImage: Anna Meier\, Pinecrest/Coco Plum\, 2018\, 24″ x 36″ – photo credit: David William Carson

SUMMARY:Lowe Art Museum presents Sebastian Spreng's DRESDEN
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, May 17th from 7-9pm join us at the Lowe Art Museum for the opening reception of Sebastian Spreng’s interactive exhibition DRESDEN. Spreng’s DRESDEN depicts the decimation of this beautiful eastern German city by Allied bombers in February 1945\, and is a meditation on mankind’s infinite capacity for both good and evil. Despite the stark messaging of the images in the DRESDEN project\, the 61 works\, created on an iPad\, have an undeniably lyrical\, painterly quality due\, in part\, to Spreng’s deep knowledge of and passion for classical music; he infuses his paintings with the spirit of his preferred composers.\nSebastian Spreng: DRESDEN is made possible thanks\, in part\, to Presenting Sponsor Beaux Arts and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Bass presents Karen Rifas: Deceptive Constructions
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 23rd from 8-10pm join us at The Bass for the opening reception of Karen Rifas’ exhibition\, Deceptive Constructions. Well known for her minimal cord and leaf installations\, and precise\, methodical line drawings\, in 2016\, Rifas began a focused exploration into the constructive possibilities of color. Employing densely hued shapes and irregular lines\, Rifas creates spaces that oscillate between the two- and three-dimensional. Exhibition is on view through October 21\, 2018.\nFor more than thirty years\, Miami-based artist Karen Rifas has amassed a body of work that endeavors to understand and re-imagine space. Deceptive Constructions surveys this recent body of work for the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in over 10 years. Through variegated floor and sculptural installations\, works on paper\, and wood panel\, Rifas uses a concise language of richly contrasted color to alter our perception of space.\nImage courtesy of the artist.
