SUMMARY:Laundromat Art Space: INTERSPACE
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 6th from 6-10pm enjoy the Opening Reception of INTERSPACE at Laundromat Art Space. INTERSPACE inspires a dialogue between figuration and abstraction\, examining the space between the subject and its essence\, between the natural and architectural landscapes and the internal existential landscape or perception. Whether drawing upon the architecture of the natural\, built or emotional environments all four artists seek to understand and distill a sense of space\, both formally as construct and conceptually as perception. This exhibition is curated by Erin Parish.\nDissecting the space between the depiction of and the experience of a place or sense of a place\, Dressler and Davidow’s works apply strong formal process to the “canvas”\, physically restructuring it\, whether literally carving into the picture plane or folding\, tanning\, grinding into\, shrinking and stretching it. Gonella’s layered reinterpretation of photographically represented architecture balances a sense of emotional time with actual space\, while Henriquez’s bold\, gestural markings form an architecture of emotion far outside the representational plane\, yet firmly as real. INTERSPACE will be on view through November 2\, 2018.\nParticipating Artists: Joerg Dressler\, Julie Davidow\, Marina Gonella\, Juan Henriquez.

SUMMARY:ArtCenter/South Florida: Parallels and Peripheries
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 10th from 6-9pm experience the grand opening of ArtCenter/South Florida‘s newest exhibition\, Parallels and Peripheries\, which celebrates eight women artists who challenge the power dynamics between mainstream American society and marginalized communities.\n6 – 7 p.m. Panel discussion\n7 – 9 p.m. Exhibition Opening + Resident Night\nThe works examine a range of topics\, including stereotypes fueled by migration\, race and gender. Each responds to our dramatically shifting cultural and political landscape and its roots in centuries of efforts designed to oppress disenfranchised people. The artmaking is personal\, born from the narratives\, myths and memories that shape the artists’ – and society’s – identities.\nCurated by Larry Ossei-Mensah\, the newly named Susanne Feld Hilberry Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and Co-Founder of ARTNOIR\, Parallels and Peripheries features artists Bethany Collins\, Lizania Cruz\, Genevieve Gaignard\, Susan Lee-Chun\, Joiri Minaya\, Jamilah Sabur\, Saya Woolfalk\, and Kennedy Yanko.\nFree and open to the public\, RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Miami New Media Festival: Opening Night at Paseo Wynwood
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 10th at 9pm enjoy the Opening of Miami New Media Festival 2018 (MNMF) taking place at Paseo Wynwood through November 4\, 2018. Guests will enjoy a variety of programming through January 2019 with many events that include activities in Aruba\, Colombia \, Spain\, Italy\, Dominican Republic and Venezuela\, with the coordination of organizers: Andreina Fuentes\, Adriana Barrios\, Marcelo Llobell and Gerardo Zavarce.\nCreated in Miami in 2006 by the Arts Connection Foundation\, the foundation of the Venezuelan artist and curator Andreína Fuentes\, the MNMF is a multimedia festival that aims to activate diverse networks and communities of artistic practice\, around the possibilities and uses of the video art and other media associated with technology. Since its creation\, it has presented video installations\, digital art pieces in 3D\, live music and performances\, of more than 250 artists from 15 countries\, from different themes.\nThe curatorial proposal of the Miami New Media Festival 2018  is ‘Water\, Heritage and Climate Change’\, and has to do with Miami’s relationship with water\, as it is a city close to the ocean\, with beaches\, navigation channels and bridges. Therefore\, the curatorial committee of the Festival encouraged proposals for art and technology that work on a sensory and multidimensional approach to the symbolism of water and the way it is affected by pollution and toxic waste\, according to the organizers.\n  \nOctober 10 2018 at 9pm. SUMMARY:Wolfsonian-FIU: Director's Talk 'Skin Deep\, Deco and Death'
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 11th from 7–9pm enjoy a Director’s Talk ‘Skin Deep: Deco and Death‘ at The Wolfsonian-FIU. Art Deco is known for its sinuous curves\, polished surfaces\, sensual materials\, and erotic depictions of the male and female body. But during Deco’s height in the 1920’s and 1930’s\, physical health was under enormous threat. How and why did its fantasies become so misaligned with the realities of the world? Wolfsonian director Tim Rodgers invites you to take a fresh look at old ideals in a special lecture inspired by Deco: Luxury to Mass Market.\n$10 / Free for Wolfsonian members | RSVP here.

SUMMARY:The Bass presents Paola Pivi: Art with a view & Aaron Curry: Tune Yer Head
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 13th from 6-8pm enjoy the Opening Reception of Paola Pivi: Art with a view and Aaron Curry: Tune Yer Head at The Bass. The openings are free with museum admission; a private reception for museum members will be held from 5-6pm.\nPaola Pivi’s artistic practice is diverse and enigmatic. Her oeuvre appears to have been formed through multiple creative minds. Each piece poses questions and is defined by its openness to interpretation. She appropriates cultural symbols and transforms them in an art context. Art with a view at The Bass presents new work by the artist\, as well as Pivi’s anthropomorphic\, feather-covered polar bears; canvases of cascading pearls; video showing fish in flight on a passenger jet; and a 65-foot inflatable ladder. Each piece poses questions and is defined by its openness to interpretation\, through the appropriation of cultural symbols. The exhibition is on view through March 10\, 2019.\nTune Yer Head presents new and recent work by Texas born\, LA-based artist Aaron Curry. Though Curry gained early recognition as a sculptor\, making a “return” to painting in 2015\, his practice is deeply rooted in the painterly. His exhibition at The Bass surveys the diversity of his practice in terms of materiality and form\, highlighting the interplay between painting\, sculpture and collage. Curry’s work reads as a dialogue with the artists and creative producers that have influenced him throughout his life. From Modernist artists like Picasso\, Picabia and Calder\, to cartoonist Basil Wolverton\, to BMX and skate culture\, Curry draws inspiration from a wide array of sources\, which manifest as an explosive mashup of color\, texture\, and scale on the walls of The Bass’ first floor galleries. Exhibition is on view through April 21\, 2019.

SUMMARY:NSU Art Museum Art Rountable: Aurora Molina
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 16th from 12noon -1:30pm experience Art Rountable with Aurora Molina at NSU Art Museum. Addressing the objectification of beauty and growing anonymity of the elderly in our society\, Miami-based artist Aurora Molina will discuss the media-fueled manipulation\, edification and standardization of physical beauty and the increasing denial of the actual process of physical aging. “To be old today is to slowly become invisible\,” states the artist. Molina’s work is\, in many ways\, a critique of this postmodern iconography as it attempts to highlight not only the natural process of aging but society’s refusal to recognize it as such.\nAurora Molina was born in La Havana\, Cuba\, in 1984\, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 16. She received her Associates of Arts degree in Visual Arts from Miami-Dade College\, Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from FIU\, and Master’s degree in contemporary art from the Universidad Europea de Madrid. She is represented by Bernice Steinbaum Gallery.\nFree for members; $10 non-members. RSVP HERE. Lunch may be pre-ordered from the museum cafe by calling 954-262-0255. View menu here.
