SUMMARY:Annual Benefit 2019: A Very AIRIE Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 9th from 4-7pm join Artists In Residence In Everglades (AIRIE) for their major fundraising event of the year\, A Very AIRIE Afternoon\, at The Kampong in Coconut Grove. Guests and attendees will enjoy an ecologically-inspired celebration of art\, music and theater featuring original performances by 2019 AIRIE Fellows. Enjoy specially curated wines\, craft cocktails and delicious treats in one of South Florida’s most unique botanical settings. Proceeds from the event will provide important support for AIRIE programming\, exhibitions and operations. Purchase your tickets here.\n\n  \nChampagne Toast at The Study:\nVIP ticket holders are invited for a tour of Dr. David Fairchild’s Laboratory and Study\, the installation by conceptual American artist Mark Dion that re-imagines the laboratory of the ever inquisitive South Florida pioneer\, the late Dr Fairchild and takes visitors back in time. Some of the earliest meetings to promote the Everglades as a National Park were held at The Kampong. In 1929\, as the first president of the Tropical Everglades Park Association\, Fairchild helped usher in a new era of the tropical wetland.\nEntertainment:\nMusic on the main lawn of the Kampong estate performed by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Venuti. Performance by Agile Rascal Bicycle Touring Theatre\, whose work at the intersection of art and bike culture uses theatre to foster a dialogue about the shifting physical and cultural landscape of our country. This original production is being created during the group’s January 2019 residence in the Everglades. With costumes\, sets and storylines influenced by the epic River of Grass\, the play is guaranteed to be uniquely Floridian.\nArt Auction\, Silent Auction and Raffle:\nFall in love with original works or art by local artists and AIRIE fellows and place your bid. The Art Auction will preview online\, beginning in January\, and works will be available to ship directly to you following A Very AIRIE Afternoon. Proceeds from the Art Auction are split between AIRIE and the artist. A Silent Auction of cultural experiences\, local attractions\, favorite restaurants and more are available for bidding at the event.

SUMMARY:Irreversible Projects presents Stacey Mandell at MDC: 'Letters To Our Younger Self'
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 22nd at 7pm experience the Opening Reception of Stacey Mandell‘s solo exhibition at Miami Dade College (MDC) Hialeah Campus\, ‘Letters To Our Younger Self’\, curated by Noor Blazekovic and Alejandro Mendoza of Irreversible Projects.\n“Communicating through shorthand is my art. Gregg Shorthand is a phonetic writing system developed in the late 19th century. Its usage has declined greatly with the advent of technology. I create a type of urban iconography by using shorthand words and phrases as an abstract gestural form. The form’s meaning provides a narrative abstraction on the canvas. At its most basic\, shorthand is a series of elliptical figures and bisecting lines. I use those figures and lines to express my thoughts and feelings. I am inspired by words\, emotions\, culture\, activities of daily life\, and current events. I envision my art to illustrate a larger issue\, a culture\, or an idea that the viewer can relate to or learn from. My art is for anyone who seeks meaning from abstract art … and for anyone who does not.” —Stacey Mandell.
