SUMMARY:The University of Miami: When the Curtain Rises by Juan Sebastian
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, May 8th from 6-9pm the University of Miami presents When the Curtain Rises\, a Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Juan Sebastian. When the Curtain Rises\, is a retrospective solo show features a collection of 23 exceptional black-and-white and color photographs and a sublime poetic visual installation experience of contemporary Colombian photographer Juan Sebastian\, an artist best known for his magical photo-realistic compositions and the richness of emotions captured through his lens. The exhibition encompasses an important body of work which reflects on four fundamental axes: self-portrait as search for identity; time; the body as the space for intimacy\, and motifs from fashion as symbolic of theater\, death\, and simulation. In each series these focuses intertwine\, and the artist explores not only formal qualities\, but as well his own humanity\, and uses photography as means of communicating with his viewers. Exhibition on view from May 8 – 26\, 2019.

SUMMARY:Twin Flames: A Solo-Exhibition by Justin Aversano
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 18th from 7-11pm experience the opening reception for Twin Flames\, a solo exhibition by Justin Aversano at Superchief Gallery New York. “For ‘Twin Flames‘ I photographed 100 sets of twins\, aiming to create body of work focused on the existence of multiple births and the phenomena of twindom through an immersive portrait survey. Twins and multiple siblings provide a lens on the magic and causality of biology. In our everyday society\, twins\, triplets et al. have an assigned position within all current and historical cultures—a shared tulpa of genetics\, fate and timing. Twindom has a deep root in shared storytelling\, its visuals conjure metatextual manifestations across the astrological\, the mythological\, the academic and the popular\, stringing together tangents of the everyday and simultaneously karmic. By using three formats of film Polaroid\, 120mm\, and 4×5 by focusing on the simple idea of seeking an “intentional phenomenology” by direct image making\, I can facilitate a broad and reflexive photographic engagement that is about these unique individuals and their presence in our collective nature.”\n  \nImage: Justin Aversano\, Twin Flames\, Gilli & Ali.
