SUMMARY:Coral Gables Museum presents The Compassion Project
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 6th from 7-9pm the Coral Gables Museum presents the opening of The Compassion Project. This exhibition compiles the work of twenty local and nationally renowned photographers who have been paired with formerly incarcerated women\, and asked to make a portrait of them while they are in the process of re-integration to society. Artists delve on these women’s sense of belonging and on their concept of home. Their powerful photographs reveal the real women – mothers\, daughters\, and wives\, who ended up behind bars. Photographs are complemented by the subjects’ powerful testimonies.\nThe Art of Compassion is curated by photographer and producer Starr Sariego and it is part of “The Compassion Project”. This initiative aims to redefine the preconceptions about formerly incarcerated women through photography\, film\, an interactive app\, and a rich educational curricula\, and works in collaboration with LEAP\, an organization that empowers women to put prison in the past.

SUMMARY:Dot Fiftyone Gallery presents Lush Green Tropical Jungle
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 6th from 7-10pm Dot Fiftyone Gallery is pleased to present Lush Green Tropical Jungle\, a group show featuring Florida-based artists Brooks Dierdorff\, Gonzalo Fuenmayor\, Anastasia Samoylova and Magnus Sodamin\, curated by Veronica Flom. The show will be on view from June 6 to July 20\, 2019.\nThe name of the show Lush Green Tropical Jungle alludes to the titles of commercial stock photo data bases of tropical areas. The exhibition questions our experience with the environment in a state such as Florida\, where the difference among seasons is blurred\, and unpredictable weather conditions and natural disasters emphasize both human vulnerability and human manipulation. From paintings of exuberant foliage of the garden of the Fairchild to the celestial photographs depicting Eden; from the tourist-centered areas of Miami to the Eurocentric vision of the tropics\, the show’s emphasis centers on this dissonance between nature as both paradise and catastrophe. In the age of Anthropocene\, these works raise debates about the ways in which we represent nature and the role that nature has in our life.\n\nImage: Magnus Sodamin\, ‘Red Sky at Night’\, Acrylic on Panel\, 30″ x 24″\, 2018. SUMMARY:NSU Art Museum: Creativity Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 8th from 12 – 1:30pm enjoy a mindful art-making exercise at NSU Art Museum inspired by gratitude for the work of our hands and by the unique fingerprints we leave on the world. Inspired by “earth artists” Ana Mendieta and Andy Goldsworthy\, participants will make ephemeral mandalas and designs using materials from nature. Use your cell phone or camera to document and photograph your fleeting creation.\nCreativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of creative exploration and the mind-to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being\, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms\, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. The workshop is led by educator Lark Keeler\, a specialist in mindfulness education.\nCreativity Exploration is sponsored by the Charles P. Ferro Foundation. Limited space. Advance reservations required. $10 museum members; $15 non-members. Please RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Lowe Art Museum: Joint Opening Reception for Billie Lynn\, 'A House Divided & Visions of Place'
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 20th from 7 – 9pm enjoy a joint opening reception for Billie Lynn: A House Divided & Visions of Place at the Lowe Art Museum. University of Miami Associate Professor of Sculpture Billie Grace Lynn is known for creating meticulous\, thought-provoking projects and interventions that address some of contemporary culture’s most pressing issues head-on. Her latest work is no exception: featuring Lynn’s sculptural interpretation of a 26-foot tall hoodie (the garment stereotypically associated with black male youth in America) and an 18-foot mirrored\, kinetic obelisk (modeled on the iconic Washington Monument)\, this interactive\, inter-disciplinary project invites viewers to reflect on identity politics\, civic engagement\, civil discourse\, and democracy’s precarious fragility.\nVisions of Place: Complex Geographies in Contemporary Israeli Art. Visions of Place offers a unique lens through which to view and better understand the complexities of Israel. Geography\, in all its many manifestations – physical\, personal\, religious\, political\, historical\, and economic- among others – is an inescapable part of Israeli life\, psyche\, and art. The exhibition includes approximately fifty works\, including photographs\, videos\, installations\, paintings\, sculptures\, and mixed media\, by thirty-four contemporary artists who explore contending views of history and identity\, questioning relationships to\, and conflicts over\, place.\n*Admission: $12.50\, FREE for members / RSVP here.\n\nImage: Billie Grace Lynn standing next to ‘American Mask’.

SUMMARY:Overtime at The Bass
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 26th from 6-9pm enjoy Overtime at The Bass\, presenting a reorientation of GeoVanna Gonzalez’s installation\, PLAY\, LAY\, AYE\, a modular sculpture examining the way public art can be used to create spaces that are more inclusive and queer. For this iteration\, the installation is laid out as a platform to navigate movement. Vogue performances from the House of Ninja will hone in on how dance is a simulacrum for freedom and will be followed by a DJ set from Pam Jones.\nIn this project\, Gonzalez explores the ability for something or someone to be simultaneously in flux and stable. Highlighted by the structures’ endless orientations\, PLAY\, LAY\, AYE honors the intersectional realities of our identities. In each presentation\, performance responds to this duality. Here\, we hold space for artists and activists\, POC\, womxn\, queer\, trans and gender non-conforming folks\, who navigate their art as a form of self-empowerment. RSVP here.\nIn celebration of National LGBTQ Pride Month\, this event will be “pay-what-you-wish” at the door.
