SUMMARY:Yayoi Kusama in Miami
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 9th from 11am – 5pm experience Yayoi Kusama in Miami. ICA Miami presents a special off-site exhibition of artist Yayoi Kusama’s All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins in the Miami Design District\, marking the first time that one of Kusama’s signature “Infinity Mirror Rooms” will be on view in Miami.\nOn view from October 12\, 2019 through January 31\, 2020\, the work features a mesmerizing array of Kusama’s signature spotted pumpkins within a mirror-lined room illuminated with LED lighting. This special presentation is made possible with support from Inigo Philbrick Gallery. All proceeds benefit ICA Miami’s arts education programs.\nAll the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins (2016) showcases the artist’s singular approach to large-scale installation and incorporates one of the artist’s quintessential symbols: the spotted pumpkin. One of the first mirrored pumpkin rooms created by Kusama\, the installation draws on several of the artists’ characteristic themes\, including infinity\, the sublime and obsessive repetition. Expanding on her seminal pumpkin room\, Mirror Room (Pumpkin) (1991)\, originally commissioned for the Japanese Pavilion at the 1993 Venice Biennale\, All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins (2016) focuses the reflective chamber on a series of acrylic yellow gourds covered in black polka dots\, allowing viewers to fully immerse themselves in Kusama’s creation\, becoming part of the art.\nYayoi Kusama (b. 1929\, Matsumoto\, Japan) is a pioneering installation artist and painter whose celebrated career spans over six decades. Her “Infinity Mirror Rooms” are some of her most experimental and iconic works\, often incorporating a variety of illuminated objects. The “Infinity Mirror Rooms” remain as challenging and unclassifiable today as when they debuted in 1965\, immersing visitors in dazzling environments that produce an almost hallucinatory effect through reflection and repetition.\nVisiting the Exhibition: Free Admission every Thursday on a first-come\, first-serve basis. Timed tickets will be available for Fridays\, Saturdays and Sundays for $15. Yayoi Kusama’s All the Eternal Love I Have for Pumpkins is designed to hold one person at a time and is intended to be experienced for approximately 1 minute.

SUMMARY:NSU Art Museum: Rob Pruitt’s Flea Market
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 18th and Sunday\, January 19th from 11am – 5pm in conjunction with the exhibition Happy!\, NSU Art Museum brings Rob Pruitt’s Flea Market to Fort Lauderdale. The internationally renowned contemporary artist\, who The New York Times has called one of the art world’s most popular provocateurs\, has been staging his nomadic flea markets around the world since 1999 in locations from New York to London’s Tate Museum. Pruitt is inviting local artists and vendors to sell their wares during the two-day happening\, which will be held at NSU Art Museum.\nTaking the form of a traditional open-air bazaar\, Rob Pruitt’s flea market is an opportunity to meet artists and take home an original artwork in a relaxed atmosphere. By highlighting bartering and haggling as both economic and performative\, and featuring a diverse array of goods from artwork to housewares\, Pruitt’s Flea Market blurs the line between art and commerce.\nThe Flea Market will be open Saturday\, January 18\, 11 AM – 5 PM and Sunday\, January 19\, Noon – 5 PM. Admission is free to the public.

SUMMARY:Art and Culture Center/Hollywood: ‎Drawing on Likeness
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 18th from 5-8pm you are cordially invited to the Opening Reception of Drawing on Likeness at the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood. New York critic and independent curator Saul Ostrow has organized the exhibition ‘Drawing on Likeness‘\, which includes work by Ivelisse Jiménez (Puerto Rico/USA)\, Gustavo Prado (Brazil/USA) and Lidija Slavkovic (Serbia/USA). The exhibition consists of work that has been previously fabricated as well as site-specific pieces.\nThe artists will arrive prior to the opening of Drawing on Likeness to use the exhibition space as a site of production. A publication of the exhibition will be available online. These artists work in diverse media and genres; Jiménez makes painterly installations of transparent materials\, Prado creates multi-media works including photographs\, videos and sculptural objects constructed with surveillance mirrors\, and Slavkovic makes “cut-drawing” as well as imagistic works\, which explore the space between perception and cognition. Seemingly\, this would appear as a random mash-up since these artists do not share any singular concept or theme as subject. Yet amidst all their differences the exhibition highlights their affinities\, shared structures\, conceptual characteristics\, and aesthetics amongst their work\, which they have morphed.\nThere will be an artist talk with Saul Ostrow\, Ivelisse Jiménez\, Gustavo Prado\, and Lidija Slavkovic at 5:30 pm. Also opening this night will be Michelle Lisa Polissaint’s concurrent exhibition\, ‘Ruining Love Songs‘.\nAdmission is $10 – Free for Members.

SUMMARY:Oolite Arts: Diego Gutierrez's 'Hypersensitive Romantic' Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 22nd from 7-9pm enjoy the Opening Reception of Diego Gutierrez’s first solo exhibition ‘Hypersensitive Romantic‘ at Oolite Arts. Experience a celebration of the opening of the first exhibition of the year and Diego Gutierrez’s first solo show\, curated by Amy Galpin. This Event is Free & Open to the Public\, RSVP here.\nIn his rigorous studio practice\, Diego Gutierrez questions the function of painting. Synthesizing varied art-historical approaches\, he pushes formal boundaries by tearing surfaces\, adding sculptural elements\, and reworking subject matter obsessively. Through this dedicated process\, he investigates the construction of meaning and ruminates on how his work exists in his studio versus in a public setting\, where it might be activated by viewers in unexpected ways.\n\n  \nBorn in Los Angeles in 1982\, Diego Gutierrez currently lives and works in Miami. He received his BFA from Cal State Fullerton in 2009 and a MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012. Gutierrez’s work has been included in multiple group exhibitions including ‘Welcome to Miami’ at The Fountainhead Residency\, Miami\, ‘Doers Doing’ at Gesamtkunst Werkshop\, Brooklyn\, N.Y.\, and ‘Spheres of Meaning: An Exhibition of Artists’ Books at the Frost Art Museum.
