SUMMARY:Locust Projects presents Christina Pettersson: In the Pines
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 3rd from 6:30 – 8:30pm enjoy the Opening Reception of the new site-specific installation ‘In the Pines‘ by Christina Pettersson at Locust Projects. In the Pines transforms the Project Room at Locust Projects into a cemetery populated by early South Florida people and local figures unknown to most current residents. A lasting impression of the collective past\, cemeteries are perfectly designed to contemplate the past’s narrative and act as a memorial. Surrounded by drawings inspired by local sites\, visitors will be able to create grave rubbings from handmade tombstones and view a video of the artist’s travels through historic areas. The installation celebrates South Florida’s history by mourning what has been lost while also taking back the cemetery for the living\, strengthening our sense of community by honoring the dead and exploring their forgotten history. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public activations. This exhibition is on view from April 03 – June 13\, 2020.\nAbout the Artist: Born in Stockholm\, Sweden\, Christina Pettersson has lived in Miami\, FL most of her life. Her last two solo exhibitions\, in Everglades National Park and at the historic Deering Estate on Biscayne Bay\, reflect her lifelong passions in her hometown.\n\n  \nImage: Photography by Eli Peck.

SUMMARY:Locust Projects presents GeoVanna Gonzalez: HOW TO: Oh\, Look at Me
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 3rd from 7-9pm enjoy the Opening Reception of GeoVanna Gonzalez’s solo show at Locust Projects\, HOW TO: Oh\, look at me\, an act of intersemiotic translation. The words / commas / syntax of Martin Jackson’s poem ‘No Rothko’ have been translated into the metal / bolts / corners of Gonzalez’s installation. The poem is taken from Jackson’s open-source poetry collection: www.tutorials.fyi. Written and shared in Google Docs\, readers are invited to comment and edit on the poems. The collection is always completing\, never completed. The invitation in this show is to see Gonzalez’s work in a similar light\, as open-source installation. The work only becomes itself through us within it; we are the figuration. This exhibition is on view in the Main Gallery from April 3 – June 13\, 2020.\nAbout the Artist: GeoVanna Gonzalez is a Miami/Berlin-based artist. Interested in producing alternative environments\, her work explores the connections between private and public spaces through interventionist and participatory art\, new forms of collaboration and deliberate collectivity.

SUMMARY:Bakehouse Art Complex presents Drawing Us In: A Conversation about Contemporary Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, April 10th from 2 – 4pm Bakehouse Art Complex presents a webinar\, Drawing Us In: A Conversation about Contemporary Drawing. For two weeks in March 2020\, a group of fourteen artists from around the globe were to participate in L’AIR‘s drawing research residency in Paris. This conversation\, led by Bakehouse artist Jennifer Printz\, will bring a subset of these artists together to discuss what drawing means\, how they personally use the medium for their own artistic goals\, and how they have continued creating in this unprecedented situation.\nTo join the conversation\, please access the following link.\nPleasure ensure that you have ZOOM capabilities before the conversation. \nPanelists: \nYen Ha\, New York City\, NY \nOle Lejbach\, Kalundberg\, Denmark \nNicole Shimonek\, Winnipeg\, Canada \nHannah Stahulak\, Los Angeles\, CA \nGrazielle Portella\, Lisbon\, Portugal \nJennifer Printz\, Miami\, FL \n\n  \nImage: Jennifer Printz\, Attendant Emptiness\, 2017. SUMMARY:Bakehouse Art Complex presents Dispatches from Anderson Ranch: Four Bakehouse Artists on What They Learned
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, April 21st from 6 – 7:30pm Bakehouse Art Complex presents a webinar\, Dispatches from Anderson Ranch: Four Bakehouse Artists on What They Learned. From February through March 2020\, Bakehouse artists Thomas Bils\, Rhea Leonard\, Nicole Salcedo\, and Lauren Shapiro were selected to participate in the Anderson Ranch Arts Center Residency through Oolite Arts’ Home + Away Program. Moderated by Bakehouse Curatorial + Public Programs Associate\, Laura Novoa\, the four artists share their experience during the five-week residency program\, the work they created\, and how their practice has developed since their return.\nTo join the webinar\, please access the following link. \nPleasure ensure that you have ZOOM capabilities before the conversation. \nAbout the artists: \nThomas Bils was born in Melbourne\, Florida and moved to Miami to study painting at New World School of the Arts where he received his BFA in 2017. His paintings are a result of his interests over epistemology of memory and the ontology of its subjects\, using his adolescence in central Florida as the base position of introspection. \nBorn and raised in South Florida\, African American artist Rhea Leonard utilizes drawing\, printmaking\, and sculpture to explore topics highlighting the Black body and how society affects Black psychology. She received her MFA from Florida International University and her BFA from University of Florida through New World School of the Arts College. \nNicole Salcedo is a Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist born\, raised\, and based in Miami\, FL. Nicole earned her BFA from the School of Art Institute of Chicago\, where she studied drawing\, fibers\, performance\, and object design. Using meditative marks to create dense patterns\, Nicole weaves between micro and macro lines\, opening up rhythmic pathways that offer a deeper connection to the energies that flow throughout the universe. \nLauren Shapiro earned an M.F.A. in Ceramics from the University of Miami and is a visual arts faculty member at several institutions in South Florida. Her work integrates textures from tropical plant life with geometric forms to create ecologically driven sculptures and installations. She has developed cross-disciplinary projects that draw from scientific research and utilize the textures of endangered ecosystems to build sculptures and façades in clay that interface with architecture.
