Young’s works are populated by a recurring set of motifs that includes angels and ancestors\, refugees and prisoners\, pregnant women and protesters\, soldiers and workers\, construction sites\, trucks\, horses; all drawn from his immediate environment and from the aspirations and histories of those around him. Purvis depicted a visual story of the Overtown neighborhood\, illustrating a range of issues from injustice to immigration\, and every day situations.\nThrough his body of work\, Purvis Young built an expressive record and a political commentary on life in Overtown\, his Promised Land. Purvis was often seen\, riding his bike through Overtown even after his art career began to blossom.\nYoung’s works are held in the collections of the Miami-Dade Public Library System; the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York; American Folk Art Museum\, New York; High Museum of Art\, Atlanta; and de Young Museum of Art\, San Francisco\, among others. SUMMARY:The Bass Walgreens Windows presents Nicole Salcedo's 'Wandering Waves'
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 8th experience Miami-based artist Nicole Salcedo’s ‘Wandering Waves‘\, 2020 installation on view in The Bass Walgreens Window Project Space\, located at 23rd Street and Collins Avenue. This installation is on view from July 8 – December 13\, 2020.\nNicole Salcedo’s methodical\, yet intuitive mark-making visualizes amorphous concepts like cosmic energy\, one’s inherent connectedness to Nature and the oscillation of Universal forces. Salcedo’s art takes form in rhythmic and organic lines on paper or cloth that conjure real and imagined landscapes\, and often include figures that represent an androgenized spirit of Nature. Charting the wavelengths of invisible energy pulsing through the world\, these works can resemble microcosms and ecosystems of life.\nSalcedo makes visible unseen networks—akin to root systems—that connect human beings to all life forms. Global events like pandemics often illuminate the existence and necessity of these invisible relationships\, revealing a sense of natural entanglement between human beings\, landscapes\, bodies of water and even the stars. Wandering Waves is an invitation to contemplate humanity’s relationship to this spirit of entanglement. The ink-marked tapestry is a recording of this sense of connectivity\, a wandering into a subtle trance\, using brushes\, twigs\, pinecones and other plant-derived objects as materials for mark making. Image: Wandering Waves\, 2020. Sumi ink on cotton fabric and acetate\, dimensions variable.\n  \nThe Walgreens Windows project space is graciously funded by Walgreens\, in partnership with The Bass. Featuring emerging and local artists on a rotating basis\, this collaboration furthers The Bass’ mission to share the power of contemporary art through experiences that excite\, challenge and educate. The space is located in the storefront windows of the Walgreens located at 23rd Street and Collins Avenue.

SUMMARY:ArtServe Art & Chat with KX2 Ruth Avra & Dana Kleinman
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 10th from 3-4pm ArtServe Live presents an art and chat with South Florida art duo KX2: Ruth Avra & Dana Kleinman. KX2 is a collaboration of sisters Ruth Avra and Dana Kleinman\, combining their individual artistic strengths to create mathematically inspired sculpture through the fusing of metal and painting. The work is bold and geometric from a distance\, yet up close\, the textural hand-sanded metal and multi-layered paintings engages the viewer. Through the exploration of geometry\, symmetry and connection\, their work aims to create a moment of pause\, inviting the viewer to escape the stresses of the day and find a space to achieve balance. \nSince the establishment of their artistic collaboration in 2007\, KX2’s work has been featured in notable galleries and museums around the world. Importantly\, the work was catapulted into the international art scene with an invitation to represent the United States at the 2008 Beijing Biennale at the National Art Museum of China. Numerous private\, corporate and public art collections throughout North America contain KX2 works of art. \nwww.kx2art.com\nKX2 (Ruth Avra + Dana Kleinman) \nFACEBOOK LIVE\nJoin the chat on Facebook Live to write comments\, ask questions\, like\, and share.
