SUMMARY:NSU Art Museum: Stanley and Pearl Goodman Lecture on American Art
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 26th from 2-3pm join Boston College Hispanic Studies professor Elizabeth Thompson Goizueta at the NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale as she discusses Wifredo Lam’s fascination with the ceramic medium and his inspiration from Pablo Picasso and CoBrA artists. The museum hosts the Annual Stanley and Pearl Goodman Lecture on Latin American Art: Earth\, Water and Fire in the Ceramics of Wifredo Lam and Cobra. FREE for museum members\, $10 for non-members. RSVP here. Program generously sponsored by Ramón and Nercys Cernuda.\n  \nIn 1938\, Cuban artist Wifredo Lam arrived in Paris where he quickly gained the support of Pablo Picasso and was inspired by the dreamlike work of the Surrealists. When he returned to Cuba (1941 to 1951)\, he created some of his most expressive works of art\, fusing Surrealism and Magic Realism to create a hybrid style that would signal a new direction for Modern art in Latin America. \nIn the 1950s\, he joined his friend\, the Danish painter Asger Jorn\, a founder of the post-World War II avant-garde art movement CoBrA\, in the Italian coastal town Albissola\, where they and other CoBrA artists worked in the historic ceramic workshops. Lam became so consumed by this medium that he returned to Albissola multiple times\, eventually buying a house there in 1961. Lam created some 300 ceramic pieces in the last twenty-five years of his life.

SUMMARY:Frost Art Museum presents LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint is Family
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 30th from 5-7pm experience the opening reception of LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint is Family at the Frost Art Museum. Photographer and MacArthur Fellow\, LaToya Ruby Frazier\, explores Flint\, Michigan’s water crisis and the effects on its residents. Frazier spent five months with three generations of women – the poet Shea Cobb\, Shea’s mother\, Renée Cobb\, and her daughter\, Zion – living in Flint in 2016 witnessing their day to day lives as they endured one of the most devastating man-made ecological crises in US history. Citing Gordon Parks and Ralph Ellison’s 1948 collaboration Harlem is Nowhere as an influence\, Frazier utilized mass media as an outlet to reach a broad audience\, publishing her images of Flint in conjunction with a special feature on the water crisis in Elle magazine in September 2016. Like Parks\, Frazier uses the cameras as a weapon and agent of social change. This exhibition is on view from Wednesday\, January 30\, 2019 — Sunday\, April 14\, 2019. This event is free and open to the public. Metered parking is available in the Blue and Gold Garages. RSVP here.\nThe exhibition is part of the Martin Luther King\, Jr. Exhibition Series\, which addresses issues of race\, diversity\, social justice\, civil rights\, and humanity to serve as a catalyst for dialogue and to enrich our community with new perspectives.\nImage caption: LaToya Ruby Frazier\, Shea doing crochet braids in her cousin Andrea’s hair for Andrea’s daughter’s wedding\, 2016 / 2017\, Gelatin silver print\, 20 x 24 inches\, All images courtesy the artist and Gavin Brown’s enterprise\, New York / Rome.
