SUMMARY:ICA Miami: Laura Owens & Kyle Thurman Discuss the Work of Artist Michel Majerus
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 13th at 7pm (Doors Open at 6:30pm) the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami (ICA Miami) on the occasion of “Michel Majerus: Progressive Aesthetics” at ICA Miami\, artists Laura Owens and Kyle Thurman discuss the impact and ongoing influence of the work of Michel Majerus. Through the lenses of their own work\, Owens and Thurman will both reflect on Michel Majerus and the legacy of his work today. GET TICKETS HERE. \nAs contemporaries\, Owens met Majerus in 1996 in Berlin and exhibited with him in the group exhibition “Wunderbar” at the Kunstverein in Hamburg that year. The artists shared an interest in appropriated images and the radically expanded field of painting in the context of digital images and processing tools. Kyle Thurman first encountered Majerus’s work as a student in 2008\, and has since been fascinated by the artist’s consistent questioning of pop iconography\, accelerated consumerism\, and technological advancements through the medium of painting. \n  \nImage: Photo credit Laura Owens: Courtesy the artist; Sadie Coles HQ\, London; and Galerie Gisela Capitain\, Cologne; Photo: Noah Webb

SUMMARY:The Bass presents Carola Bravo: Between Absence and Presence
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 16th from 6 – 9pm enjoy the unveiling of Carola Bravo: Between Absence and Presence in Collins Park during Culture Crawl\, winner of The Bass’ New Monuments artist open call\, a project established in 2020 with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation through the museum’s Knight Art Commissions Program. \nVenezuelan American artist\, architect and cultural activist Carola Bravo challenges the traditional commemoration and use of public monuments by asking “what reflects impermanence better than recognizing invisibility and absence?” With Between Absence and Presence\, the artist highlights society’s inverted values\, reflecting the viewers’ gaze back towards themselves. The spectator becomes viewer and performer\, sparking questions about our participation in how monuments legitimize and assign value to persons\, places and moments. \nMuseum members enjoy complimentary wine by Dry Farm Wines during this opening event. Not yet a member? JOIN\, today! \nThis event is FREE with RSVP.
