DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 1st from 9am – 4pm the Coral Gables Museum\, in collaboration with the architecture educational platform Archifeed\, presents a hands-on Architecture Summer Workshop designed for high school students interested in architecture\, design\, art\, engineering\, and the built environment. \nThrough drawing\, model-making\, digital design\, and collaborative design exercises\, students will explore how architects think about space\, structure\, materials\, and the relationship between buildings and their surroundings. \nNo prior experience is required. \n  \nWHAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN\nParticipants will be introduced to core architectural principles through freehand sketching\, technical drawing\, model making\, and digital design. The program is structured around project-based work that strengthens creative thinking\, spatial understanding\, and the ability to communicate design ideas. \nStudents will also develop material for a portfolio\, documenting their work throughout the workshop. This program is intended for high school students interested in architecture\, design\, art\, engineering\, or the built environment\, particularly those considering future studies in these fields. \n

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 5th from 6:30 – 9pm the Coral Gables Museum presents a two-part documentary series by Cuban filmmaker Ernesto Fundora Hernández examining the lives of two of Cuba’s most influential cultural figures whose work became the target of state censorship in different eras. \nSpanning literature and contemporary art\, the series traces how José Lezama Lima and Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara navigated political repression while producing work that continues to shape conversations about Cuban culture\, identity\, and freedom of expression. \nEach program will open with remarks by Fundora\, followed by the screening and a conversation with invited guests. Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara will join the opening program in person to discuss his work and the events documented in the film. \nScholars and special guests will further examine the historical\, cultural\, and political context surrounding both documentaries.

Through thoughtful layering and mindful making\, participants will create poetic visual compositions that invite curiosity\, reflection\, and personal meaning. Ocner for an insightful and dynamic photography workshop. RSVP HERE. \nLearn about Matias’ works\, lighting\, how to capture a moment\, and the role of photography as a visual medium to shape narratives. \nThe workshop will begin in the Knight Skylight Gallery\, then move to sites around the Freedom Tower. Ocner is a Miami-based photojournalist born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina and raised in Miami. Ocner works for the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald. His work is featured in Journeys of Freedom and Reflections\, two exhibitions at the Freedom Tower. Matias is often on the front lines of history\, documenting pivotal events through his photography. His coverage spans natural disasters\, immigration\, protest movements\, sporting events\, and more. Through his images\, he aims to capture South Florida’s communities\, elevate their voices\, and inform readers. \nOcner is a Miami Dade College alumnus and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications\, with a concentration in photography\, from Florida International University. \nAdmission to the Freedom Tower is included with your RSVP. \nEvent attendees may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue\, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets.

Join Pérez Art Museum Miami’s (PAMM) Green Family Foundation Caribbean Cultural Institute (CCI) for a participatory culinary performance by Dominican artist David Pérez Karmadavis that explores the lived experience of migration through food\, memory\, and collective experience. \nPresented as part of Beyond Representation\, Edition 2\, Sustento Diario (Daily Sustenance) brings together cooking\, storytelling\, and the sharing of a communal meal. In collaboration with Chef Valeri Fuentes of Verde\, Karmadavis prepares dishes centered on the plantain—a staple across the Caribbean and Latin America and a familiar ingredient in Miami’s diasporic communities. \nScreened at PAMM for the first time\, a video-performance shows the artist carrying a bunch of green plantains through the city—a simple yet powerful gesture that evokes the memories\, traditions\, and lived experiences that migrants bring with them across borders. \nEvery recipe preserves stories\, gestures\, and ancestral knowledge passed from one generation to the next. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite family or cultural recipe to contribute to a collective archive of memories\, traditions\, and flavors\, making the experience one we create together. \nThroughout the night\, enjoy an extended happy hour (5–9pm) and a live vinyl DJ set by Jesús Rodríguez (Rum and Coke). Inspired by artworks on view at the museum\, children and caregivers will explore hands-on creative tools that nurture self-expression\, emotional awareness\, and nervous system regulation. \nRotate through three engaging stations connecting art\, movement\, sound\, color\, and the senses: \nBreathe Better\nPractice playful breathing techniques and create colorful bubble-inspired artworks\, drawing on Jesús Rafael Soto’s Penetrable BBL Blue. \nMusic & Mood\nExperiment with sound\, rhythm\, and expressive mark-making while discovering how music shapes our emotions and helps us feel grounded—inspired by Basquiat: Figures\, Signs\, Symbols. \nColor & Light\nExploration Step into immersive visual experiences and hands-on light play to discover the power of color\, inspired by Carlos Cruz-Diez’s Chromosaturation. \nDesigned for families with children of all ages\, this workshop introduces simple\, research-based sensory tools that can be carried into everyday life—at home\, at school\, and beyond. Through artmaking\, play\, and shared discovery\, families will experience how creativity builds resilience\, fosters connection\, and supports well-being for every age. \n\nAll ages welcome. No prior art experience needed—just curiosity! Free with museum admission. Admission is $18 for adults and free for members.

Join the Freedom Tower’s Knight Skylight Gallery for MOAD Moves: Salsa Workshop with Michelle Gonzalez de la Cruz. \nIn this beginner-friendly class\, instructor de la Cruz will teach attendees the fundamentals of salsa footwork and timing. Once everyone is comfortable with the basics\, the class will then enjoy putting it all together\, practicing the moves in a fun and supportive environment. \nPerfect for all ages\, the class is open to the public and free to attend. \nAttendees may park for free at MDC’s Parking Lot 1\, located on the south side of the Freedom Tower.
