SUMMARY:ICA Miami presents Geologic Realism: on the beach in epochal times
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 8th though Thursday\, July 11th from 2-5pm enjoy a conversation with Kathryn Yusoff at the Institute of Contemporary Art\, Miami (ICA Miami) for the museum’s Summer Intensive 2019. The Anthropocene\, as a diverse set of environmental happenings under the long arc of settler colonialism\, slavery and racial capitalism\, is delivering a lesson in geologic realism about the natality of ecological and racialised violence. Such reckonings with geology—as an inventory of matter—arrive on the foreshore in various forms of inundation that threaten\, remake and rift the taken for granted ground. In this broken ground\, the inhuman dimensions of Modernity’s horizons are engaged to reveal a foundational racialisation of matter. This seminar will investigate the grammars of these inhuman geologies on the beach as a rift/riff zone; a zone where the political terra of land as property and bodies as commodities are opened up by libidinal and littoral economies. SUMMARY:Locust Projects: Art Builders Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 13th from 6-8pm experience the Opening Reception of Locust Art Builders Exhibition at Locust Projects. The LAB: Summer Art Intensive for Teens was guided by two professional artist mentors over a four-week art intensive\, where students gain hands-on experience building an exhibition from scratch and behind-the-scenes knowledge about careers in the arts. Now in its ninth year\, The LAB brings together a diverse group of high school-aged aspiring artists from schools across Miami-Dade County for a four-week Summer Art Intensive for Teens where they learn to build an exhibition from scratch. Each year’s exhibition evolves as a unique and timely reflection of the current issues and ideas impacting youth today. The title of the show\, The nauseating dream danced gingerly in the Volkswagen is drawn from a game of exquisite corpse\, a chance-based game most notably used by the Surrealists in which a collection of words or images is collaboratively assembled. The whimsical title is meant to play on ideas of originality\, authorship\, fact vs. fiction\, and big data\, questioning if certain concepts can really be owned. For Darby is a survey exhibition of George Bethea’s paintings from 2006 through 2019 and is in honor of Walter Darby Bannard (September 23\, 1934 – October 2\, 2016). Over their 25 year friendship\, Bannard has championed Bethea’s paintings in numerous essays. Often stating that Bethea is one of the best painters of his generation. “At the same time that he is an innovator\, ahead of his time\, Bethea is an artist who belongs in spirit to earlier generations\, for whom art was as serious in intention as it was joyful in experience. The sustainability of any process in time originates in the consciousness of the creator. It is the result of the complementarity that is generated when mixing opposites. This philosophy has been the starting point of this photographic series that Roberto Lombana presents to us in his exhibition Yin & Yang.\nWith this series\, Lombana takes us to reflect on topics such as the plea for love in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in contrast to the presence of a sculpture about love in New York; or an infinite architectural image that alludes to M.C. Escher\, in contrast to an image of a mangrove in the Colombian Pacific where nature is infinite and thus presenting us with a diversity of topics such as Zen philosophy\, knowledge\, food\, highways and temples. This series is the result of photographs taken by Lombana during the last twelve years in different parts of the world\, which are composed of similar graphic elements and opposite concepts known as the YING & YANG. The conversation will touch on the artists practice and the exhibition currently on view through August 1\, 2019.\n  \nAbout The Speakers:\nJuan Pablo Garza (Maracaibo\, Venezuela\, 1980) currently lives and works in Miami. Garza´s work has been exhibited in Venezuela\, Colombia\, Peru\, Chile\, Mexico\, Canada\, United States\, Spain\, Holland\, and Germany. His solo show Reforma del Ahora (Al Borde. Maracaibo\, 2012) was published in Artforum as one of the best exhibitions of the year according to curator Sofia Hernandez Chong Cuy. He was co-founder and co-director of the Contemporary Art Space Al Borde (2010-2014) in Maracaibo\, which in 2012 won a grant from the Fundación Cisneros/CPPC within its program to support cultural organizations.\nRené Morales is Curator at Pérez Art Museum Miami\, where he has organized approximately 50 exhibitions. Recent curatorial projects at PAMM include Christo and Jeanne- Claude: Surrounded Islands\, 1980–83; Dara Friedman: Perfect Stranger; Sarah Oppenheimer: S-281913; Marjetica Potrc: The School of the Forest; Bik Van der Pol: Speechless; Gary Simmons: Frozen in Time; Monika Sosnowska: Market; and Amelia Peláez: The Craft of Modernity. Morales has spearheaded numerous major acquisitions for PAMM’s permanent collection\, including a set of nearly 400 works from the Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry\, as well as over 50 works purchased through PAMM’s Collectors Council.\nLeyden Rodriguez-Casanova was born in 1973 in Havana\, Cuba and currently lives and works in Miami\, FL. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 27th from 6-10pm enjoy the public opening of Radio Silence at the project space Estuary in the FATVillage art district of Fort Lauderdale. A period during which officials mandate that all radio wave-based transitions cease\, Radio Silenceallows us to consider the objectives\, means\, and modes of power of the human connection. Through measured and still moments\, a quiet meditation is expressed to break the analog and digital broadcasts. The exhibition addresses issues of the self and identity\, family\, tradition\, pollution\, gentrification\, voicelessness\, and nonverbal communication.
