Here the raw elements of Borragán’s art boil down to the MOUTH and the STONE. Think\, if you will\, of all the ways the human mouth serves as a threshold between an individual and the world at large. Similarly\, contemplate how many ways stones and their particulates represent site\, the earth\, the material universe\, and its non-living scaffolding. The action at the center of each of Borragán’s experiences is TO INGEST and to inscribe and reveal an image through this action. This is the alchemy. September 9\, 10 \, 12 \, 13 the museum is offering a Metalpoint Drawing Workshop with Carol Prusa. Metalpoint drawing is a centuries-old technique invented before the pencil. During the Middle Ages\, metalpoint was used by scribes in monasteries; later\, Da Vinci and Dürer became masters of this medium. This mini-course is taught by Carol Prusa\, Professor of Art at Florida Atlantic University\, and one of today’s masters of this technique. Whether you want to explore an ancient technique\, develop your drawing skills\, or both\, Drawing in Metalpoint offers creative opportunities for all adult participants. The work of Carlos Quintana is the result of his mood. His world is his work\, and all of it is\, at the same time\, cumulative. Accurate separations between series or epochs are not possible in terms of the essential\, in each there is everything that comes out of itself. The only possible identification is given by the appearance of new elements\, which are added to the body as a branch to a tree\, literally. Another essential element of Carlos Quintana’s work is his condition as subject. He himself does not see his oils as paintings\, he sees them as a whole\, and that is why he stains everything: the frames\, the study\, himself. His work is also visceral\, as visceral is his attitude towards art\, and towards life. This exhibition is on view through November 14th\, 2019. For nomadic artist Glexis Novoa\, the condition of the immigrant relates to the Cankama Sutta\, a Buddhist rule or discourse about walking meditation. The study and practice of Buddhist teachings\, originally learned as a child from his mother in Cuba\, is a thread that runs throughout Novoa’s life and art. Novoa will join curator Gean Moreno in conversation at the Freedom Tower\, where Novoa’s exhibition\, Cankama Sutta\, is currently on view in the Cuban Legacy Gallery. Novoa and Moreno will discuss the artist’s spiritual journey and meditation practice\, reflecting on how this study has influenced his artistic development. This Event is Free and Open to the Public. He has worked in painting\, performance\, and installation\, and has become internationally recognized for his site-specific graphite wall drawings. Since the late 1980s\, his work has been widely exhibited in the United States and around the world. Novoa lives and works in Miami and Havana.\nGean Moreno is the Director of the Art + Research Center at ICA Miami. He is also part of the institution’s curatorial team and has worked on exhibitions dedicated to Hélio Oiticica\, Terry Adkins\, Larry Bell\, Ettore Sottsass\, and Paulo Nazareth. He was on the Advisory Board of the 2017 Whitney Biennial and serves as co-director of [NAME] Publications. Cartaya was born in Cuba and grew up enjoying of musical improvisation with her family. Traditional Cuban music runs in Cartaya’s veins\, and jazz and American funk have shaped her artistic expression. Cartaya vocalizes Caribbean\, Afro-American\, Afro-Latin and Latin American musical rhythms to create a harmonious fusion. Singing is Cartaya’s therapy – at an early age\, she learned to express her joys\, passions\, sadness and melancholic moments through her music.\nO\, Miami will be reciting Zip Odes and promoting community engagement through poetry readings and writings during the course of the evening. For this special Saturday in the Park\, enjoy free admission not only to the AIRIE Nest Gallery to view the exhibition Fragile\, a multi-media exhibition exposing and examining the delicate fragility of the Everglades ecosystem\, but also enjoy free entrance to the park itself to explore the over 1.5 million acres of the country’s only subtropical wetland. (Park entrance fee normally $30 per vehicle.)\nComprised of works by 11 multidisciplinary artists who have participated in the AIRIE residency\, Fragile unearths new perspectives on the intricate and complex systems in which the vastness of the River of Grass operates. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 28th from 6-10pm Dimensions Variable (DV) is pleased to present 10—A Decade\, a group exhibition bringing together five past DV artists with five new ones from September 28—December 30\, 2019\, in celebration of DV’s tenth anniversary. Felice Grodin\, Fabian Peña\, Jamilah Sabur\, Tom Scicluna\, and Agustina Woodgate all represent artists who had solo/two-person projects at DV in the past. Nathalie Alfonso\, Yanira Collado\, GeoVanna Gonzalez\, Francisco Masó\, and Christina Pettersson are all artists that DV has been wanting to work with. This group is bound together by respect for their work and the diverse themes present in their practices.\nIt’s been ten years since DV officially opened in the Miami Design District in September of 2009. Since then\, many artists have come through leaving their indelible mark with inspiring projects. DV went from an unfunded upstart to a community voice for championing projects of up-and-coming and under-recognized artists with well-respected work—all while under the leadership of artists. With their 10th anniversary and their official nonprofit status\, they want to continue to push the boundaries of what a cultural space is and how it can better serve its artists and community. This year\, they expanded to include additional artists and an archivist to support more members of our community. DV is also making sure they will always be led by artists in support of artists.\nThe exhibition will also function as an auction to support DV’s programs\, facilities\, and participating artists. We hope you consider participating in the auction as 70% of the funds will support the artists and 30% will support DV.
