Art Palm Beach takes place at the Palm Beach County Convention Center\, it is the premier art fair in South Florida during the height of the Winter Season.\nLenore Rae Lampi has been associated with her biomorphic birch bark series for years but has recently moved seamlessly into a new arena of cultural commentary and pop-art influenced objects. In her latest Big Bling Series\, Lenore has embraced the forms of ribbons and bows\, essentially birch bark of another kind\, the outermost layer of cultural icons and nostalgic tendencies.\nAlways fascinated with the undulating forms in Classical drapery since the days of observing her mother’s workings as a seamstress\, Lenore now captures this movement and narrative with a Pop Art sensibility. Her new series explores the notion of adornment of the affordable kind. Ribbons\, bows\, and streamers in an historical context may evoke feelings of nostalgia\, kitsch\, and pomp. Referencing Pop Art to describe the work\, with the intention to monumentalize these humble objects. In conjunction with the floating livestream\, National Geographic Explorer\, filmmaker\, and Ph.D. student Alizé Carrère will moderate a panel discussion featuring NOAA scientist Dr. Ian Enochs and the Coral Morphologic artist/scientist duo Colin Foord and J.D. Creating the ultimate “conversation pieces\,” Robin’s creates art that is colorful and fun. She has always experienced life in color\, “Letters are different shades of colors. Numbers are primary colors. I thought everyone saw the alphabet as I did until I learned of a phenomenon that identified me. I have been described as unique\, colorful and animated and I could not tell you why\,” explained the artist. This phenonmenon is known as Synesthesia\, and it can involve any of the senses. SUMMARY:UM Art Gallery: The Forgotten Exodus\, An American Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 8th from 6-9pm the University of Miami Departments of Art and Art History and the Department of Religious Studies present THE FORGOTTEN EXODUS – AN AMERICAN REFUGE\, a portrait exhibition of the last generation of Sephardi Jews born in North Africa\, the Middle East\, and Iran at the University of Miami Art Gallery in The Wynwood Building. The exhibition will be on display from February 3 – 28\, 2020. This Event is Free and Open to the Public.\nIn the years following the founding of the State of Israel\, close to a million Jews fled their native Arab lands. Hostility and expulsion brought an abrupt end to these once vibrant communities\, scattering its members to the four corners of the earth. Until recently\, little has been formally documented\, leaving a significant part of Jewish history largely untold.\nThe photographer of THE FORGOTTEN EXODUS – AN AMERICAN REFUGE is J Tomas Lopez\, an artist with a lifelong passion for portraying the vulnerability of the passage of time through his stunning portrait photography. As a young Cuban boy who emigrated to America in the 1950’s\, Lopez felt out of place. The stories of the Jews from North Africa and the Middle East that truly ignited his interest. “I realized that the story of the Sephardi Jews is the story of every immigrant. You’re in a place—you think you’re home—and then something happens. There is the displacement\, the sense of otherness. I identified very much with everyone I photographed.”\nJ Tomas Lopez is the Chair of Art and Art History at the University of Miami. He has been showcased in over 350 group exhibitions and 35 solo exhibitions. His work is included in many permanent collections including the Library of Congress\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the National Gallery of American Art\, La Biblioteque Nationale de France\, The International Museum of Photography\, and the Museum of Modern Art. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, February 25th from 4 – 7pm enjoy the Opening Reception of the group show Beyond Paper Boundaries at Pan American Art Projects. Paper is an ironic material\, at once delicate\, yet resilient. It is so thin and fine\, and yet the content on it can carry so much weight. Paper has been the base upon which we record our history\, reveal secret loves\, mark victories and disasters\, express sorrow and joy. Paper is so fragile\, and yet some of our most important remnants of our past have been preserved on this fine material. The exhibition is curated by Janda Wetherington and is on view through March 21\, 2020.\nThe purpose of this show is two-fold. First\, in the main gallery\, a look at the way that artists can manipulate and contort paper to bring actual dimension and weight to it sculpturally\, through folding\, shadow play\, and layering\, The act of complex engineering converts the two-dimensional paper into a three-dimensional object. These pieces push the physical boundaries between the second and third dimensions. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 27th from 6-6:30pm experience a local\, Miami artist at the Pérez Art Museum Miami\, enjoy PAMM’s in-gallery tour program. Local Views at PAMM is where select local artists speak about a few works of art currently on view at the museum. This month\, Johanne Rahaman will lead the tour. Johanne Rahaman is a Trinidadian-born\, Miami-based documentary photographer\, working in both film and digital formats since 2002\, and founder of the ongoing photographic archive\, BlackFlorida\, which examines shifting urban and rural spaces occupied by the Black communities throughout the State. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker Magazine\, Vogue\, National Geographic\, Hyperallergic\, Slate\, Jezebel\, Huffington Post\, and NPR. She has been published in Oxford American Magazine\, Photo District News\, and the photojournal\, Mfon: Women Photographers of the African Diaspora.\nLocal Views at PAMM gives visitors a first-hand interaction with local artists by creating conversations centered around art and the creative process. This casual 30-minute conversation takes place on the fourth Thursday of each month. Free with museum admission. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 28th at 8pm (Rain or Shine) enjoy JAZZ at MOCA featuring Nicole Yarling at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA). Defying description\, her myriad of personal influences have created a product that begs attention across the board. Her chosen instruments are voice\, violin and fiddle (in that order). Nicole is a rich velvet voice with technical skill and personality to boot! She is a rising star in the jazz community who\, like many others\, has been at it for years. Nicole moved to Florida in 1980 and has created quite a buzz. According to the Miami Sun Sentinel\, “Every musical hat fits Nicole Yarling. For more than a decade\, she has been a part of South Florida’s musical world as a singer and violinist\, working in jazz\, rock\, R and B\, experimental music and a few other styles that defy description.”\nExtended Events\n7pm / Art Prevails Project\nArt Prevails Project will host a spoken word element with four poets performing original works inspired by moments in black history on MOCA Plaza. \n7:45pm / Wade in the Water Dance Performance\nGuests will also enjoy a special dance performance by Florencia A. Guerrier\, choreographed by Fluxus Haus founder\, Agatha Wright. This contemporary rendition of “Wade in the Water\,” a dance piece originally created by Mr. Alvin Ailey in his full length work titled “Revelations\,” is a historical compilation of the traditions\, faith\, beliefs and tenacity of the African American people set to gospels and blues music. \nCafé Crème will host a bar with a signature MOCA cocktail and the US Census will be on-site distributing giveaways. Guests will also enjoy a pop-up photo booth and more. \nOpen 7 – 10pm\, pay as you wish for admission to the museum during Jazz at MOCA.
