SUMMARY:MOAD Exhibition Tour with Magnus Sigurdarson
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 12th from 4-5pm Miami-based Icelandic artist\, Magnus Sigurdarson\, leads a tour of the first American museum exhibition of his fellow Icelander Hreinn Fridfinnsson at the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC. A longtime admirer of Fridfinnsson’s practice\, Sigurdarson looks at For the Time Being from an artist’s point of view\, sharing his unique insights about the works at MOAD. He also offers a perspective on the distinctly Icelandic qualities of Fridfinnson’s poetic art. \nMagnus Sigurdarson has exhibited his work at Reykjavik Art Museum\, the Icelandic Consulate in Berlin\, Dimensions Variable\, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens\, and Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. He studied art at Studio Cecil and Graves\, Florence\, Italy (1988); The Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts (1992); and Mason Gross School of the Arts\, Rutgers University\, New Brunswick\, New Jersey (1997). \nThis program is free but advance registration is required. ICA Miami welcomes Dr. Zoé Whitley\, curator and director of Chisenhale Gallery\, London\, who will discuss the work of Betye Saar on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition survey “Serious Moonlight.” In conversation with exhibition curator Stephanie Seidel\, Whitley will discuss Saar’s installations and the broader context of her work. Whitley most recently exhibited Saar’s works as the co-curator of the award-winning exhibition “Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power” initiated by Tate Modern in London in 2017\, which toured throughout the United States until 2020. This event is Free & open to the public. Come hear Cruz talk about her curatorial work and the artists who have inspired her practice. RSVP HERE. \nAbout the Speaker: Amada Cruz was named the Illsey Ball Nordstrom Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Seattle Art Museum in September 2019. Born in Havana\, Cuba\, Cruz studied Art History and Political Science at New York University. Her first museum position was as a curatorial intern at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York\, where she subsequently worked as a Curatorial Assistant. \nCruz’s career includes significant leadership positions at museums across the country\, such as: the Lannan Museum in Lake Worth Florida\, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution\, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago\, and the Center for Curatorial Studies Museum at Bard College. Cruz served as The Sybil Harrington Director and Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix Art Museum from February 2015 to July 2019. \nIn addition\, Cruz served as the former executive director of the San Antonio-based nonprofit residency program Artpace and was the founding program director for United States Artists in Los Angeles.
