RSVP HERE. \nThis documentary was shot during the last days of operation for the local newspaper the Miami News. Provided with unlimited access to all areas involved in the publication of the Miami News\, film director Mel Kiser captures the final events\, thoughts and activities of the staff as they prepare the final issue of the Miami News. \nKatharine Labuda\, Special Collections & Archives Librarian of Miami Dade-Public Library System\, will introduce the film. Director Mel Kiser will be in attendance for a Q&A. \n  \nImage: Director Mel Kiser and cameraman Barry Shea film editorial cartoonist Don Wright as he draws his final cartoon for the last issue of the Miami News.

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, August 17th from 6 – 8:30pm The Betsy Hotel presents a Fireside Chat with Edouard Duval-Carrié at The Gallery at The Betsy Hotel. As part of “From Venice with Love\,” The Betsy welcomes master contemporary artist Edouard Duval-Carrié for an intimate fireside conversation exploring the exhibition’s central themes—migration\, memory\, Vodou symbolism\, and the Caribbean narratives his work powerfully reimagines. GET TICKETS HERE. \nCurated by Carl-Philippe Juste\, the retrospective is on view August 1–November 15\, 2026\, with Duval-Carrié’s work filling The Betsy Gallery and extending into public space through nightly video art on The Betsy Orb throughout August. \nBorn and raised in Haiti\, Duval-Carrié left under the Duvalier regime as a teenager and later lived in Puerto Rico\, New York\, Montreal\, Paris\, and Miami. From his Little Haiti studio\, he creates luminous\, politically charged sculptures and mixed-media paintings evoking magical realism—work recently highlighted through his participation in the 61st Venice Biennale. \nHosted by Rosie Gordon-Wallace (founder of Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator)\, the evening also features a dance performance by A’Keitha Carey\, Bahamas-born artist and FIU PhD candidate in Global Dance—bringing movement and embodied storytelling into dialogue with Duval-Carrié’s visual world. \nPresented by The Betsy Writer’s Room\, FIU Public Humanities Lab\, and GMCVB Art of Black\, with support from Jorge Perez Family Foundation CreARTE Grant.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 22nd from 5 – 7pm the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC presents MOAD Makes with Matias J. Ocner. Join MOAD and photojournalist Matias J. Ocner for an insightful and dynamic photography workshop. RSVP HERE. \nLearn about Matias’ works\, lighting\, how to capture a moment\, and the role of photography as a visual medium to shape narratives. \nThe workshop will begin in the Knight Skylight Gallery\, then move to sites around the Freedom Tower. Through practical guidance\, participants will engage in observation exercises\, how to frame place\, people\, and create visual storytelling. The workshop will conclude at the Freedom Tower\, where participants can share their works and reflect on how to create visual records of people and places that define Miami. \nParticipants may use either their cameras or cell phones to take images. \nMatias J. Ocner is a Miami-based photojournalist born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina and raised in Miami. Ocner works for the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald. His work is featured in Journeys of Freedom and Reflections\, two exhibitions at the Freedom Tower. Matias is often on the front lines of history\, documenting pivotal events through his photography. His coverage spans natural disasters\, immigration\, protest movements\, sporting events\, and more. Through his images\, he aims to capture South Florida’s communities\, elevate their voices\, and inform readers. \nOcner is a Miami Dade College alumnus and holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communications\, with a concentration in photography\, from Florida International University. \nAdmission to the Freedom Tower is included with your RSVP. \nEvent attendees may park for free in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue\, between NE Fifth and NE Sixth Streets.

What recipe reminds you of home? Join Pérez Art Museum Miami’s (PAMM) Green Family Foundation Caribbean Cultural Institute (CCI) for a participatory culinary performance by Dominican artist David Pérez Karmadavis that explores the lived experience of migration through food\, memory\, and collective experience. \nPresented as part of Beyond Representation\, Edition 2\, Sustento Diario (Daily Sustenance) brings together cooking\, storytelling\, and the sharing of a communal meal. In collaboration with Chef Valeri Fuentes of Verde\, Karmadavis prepares dishes centered on the plantain—a staple across the Caribbean and Latin America and a familiar ingredient in Miami’s diasporic communities. \nScreened at PAMM for the first time\, a video-performance shows the artist carrying a bunch of green plantains through the city—a simple yet powerful gesture that evokes the memories\, traditions\, and lived experiences that migrants bring with them across borders. \nEvery recipe preserves stories\, gestures\, and ancestral knowledge passed from one generation to the next. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite family or cultural recipe to contribute to a collective archive of memories\, traditions\, and flavors\, making the experience one we create together. \nThroughout the night\, enjoy an extended happy hour (5–9pm) and a live vinyl DJ set by Jesús Rodríguez (Rum and Coke).
