SUMMARY:MOAD at MDC: Screening of 'In The Park' & 'New Town Utopia'
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 10th at 6pm MOAD MDC presents The Film Series at Bill Cosford Cinema\, University of Miami. Catch Orlando Jimenez Leal’s short film In the Park\, capturing a sunny day in Miami’s Bayfront Park\, before taking in New Town Utopia\, a documentary feature about utopian dreams among a group of artists\, poets\, and musicians living in Essex. This Event is Free and Open to the Public\, RSVP here.\n  \nIn the Park (1962)\, 14 minutes\, Directed by Orlando Jiménez-Leal. In the Park\, is a trip to the past. The year is 1962. The subject\, a Sunday day in Bay Front Park\, Miami\, when the world was still innocent. The hidden camera\, the free cinema\, allows us to observe from a distance\, to be voyeurs without being discovered. We see young and old in a sweet-and-sour situation\, which gives the viewer a strange nostalgic feeling.\nNew Town Utopia (2017)\, 80 minutes\, Directed by Christopher Ian Smith. A journey of memory\, place\, and performance\, New Town Utopia is a documentary feature about utopian dreams and concrete realities—the challenging\, funny\, and sometimes tragic story of the British new town of Basildon\, Essex. Facing austerity\, adversity and personal battles the artists\, musicians\, and poets of Basildon are individuals driven by their creative spirit to improve their community through art\, poetry\, music\, and some rather angry puppets. New Town Utopia features Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent (Iris\, Topsy-Turvy\, Moulin Rouge) as the voice of Lewis Silkin MP.

SUMMARY:Fabien Castanier Gallery: Mark Jenkins Solo Exhibition "From Here to Nowhere"
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 13th at 11am Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition for American artist Mark Jenkins\, From Here to Nowhere. The show will be held in both gallery locations\, beginning with the Progressive Art Brunch event in Little Haiti on Sunday October 13th and continuing with a subsequent opening reception in Wynwood on Saturday October 19th. This will be the second solo exhibition for the artist at the gallery\, enjoy the Opening Reception with the Artist.\nWith biting wit and an eye for the absurd\, Mark Jenkins presents a new series of provocative sculptures for his latest solo exhibition. Each piece conveys a larger story\, whether a commentary on society or a critique of contemporary culture\, the only true meaning behind each tableau is interpreted through the viewers’ perspective – unique and often variable to the individual. This interaction between the audience and artwork continues to drive the “performance” aspect of his hyper-realistic figures\, and for the first time ever\, he has created a truly interactive and immersive experience for his audience. In the gallery’s Little Haiti space\, From Here to Nowhere will feature a performative installation entitled “Nucleus”\, which will allow viewers to interact and “play” with the artist’s sculptures.

SUMMARY:Lowe Art Museum Opening Receptions for Diago: The Pasts of this Afro-Cuban Present & Carlos Estévez: Cities of the Mind
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 24th from 7 – 9pm enjoy the opening reception of two new exhibitions at the Lowe Art Museum | University of Miami.\nDiago: The Pasts of this Afro Cuban Present (October 24\, 2019 – January 19\, 2020)\nA leading member of the New Afro-Cuban cultural movement\, visual artists Juan Roberto Diago (b. 1971) has produced a body of work that offers a revisionist history of the Cuban Nation. Featuring forty works produced by Diago over the course of his career\, this exhibition was guest curated by Dr. Alejandro de la Fuente (Robert Woods Bliss Professor of Latin American History and Economics\, Professor of African and African American Studies\, Director of the Afro-Latin American Research Institute at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research\, and Chair of the Cuba Studies Program at Harvard University) and is presented in collaboration with the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (Miami MoCAAD).\nCarlos Estévez: Cities of the Mind (October 24\, 2019 – May 3\, 2020)\nThe most recent project of renowned Cuban-American artist Carlos Estévez\, Cities of the Mind features nine large-format paintings that reference the artist’s fascination with city plans. Inspired by the Havana of his youth\, the Medieval European cities to which he has traveled extensively as an adult\, and his abiding interest in symbolic cosmology and origin stories\, Estévez has created in this body of new work personal maps of the human mind influenced by ancient cartography. Guest curated by Dr. Carol Damian.\nAdmission: $12.50; Complimentary for Lowe members. Purchase Tickets here.\n  \nImage: Juan Roberto Diago. Sin Titulo (Untitled)\, 2011. SUMMARY:Mindy Solomon Gallery: Hidden Hour
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 25th from 6 – 9pm experience the Opening Reception of Hidden Hour at Mindy Solomon Gallery in the Little River Arts District. Hidden Hour features Pam Lins\, Nicole Cherubini\, Rubens Ghenov\, Amy Pleasant\, Craig Drennen\, Adam Milner\, Shai Yehezkelli. Curated by Linda Lopez and Marc Mitchell. This exhibition features seven artists whose work invokes various notions of “collecting.” Adam Milner scours the world around him for discarded or obscure objects to define aspects of identity and relationships. Craig Drennen\, who\, for the past decade\, created artworks based on characters from the critically panned 1984 film Supergirl and Shakespeare’s obscure play Timon of Athens\, has acquired a roster of players that can be called upon for any performance. Pam Lins\, who is known for interdisciplinary work that addresses how history can be synthesized to convey emotion\, presents a collection of crying eyes she has been making weekly since Donald Trump has taken office. Both Rubens Ghenov and Nicole Cherubini focus on the past as a vehicle to explore how we determine value in both everyday objects and those with cultural significance. The drawings of Amy Pleasant seek to document the uniqueness\, as well as the commonality\, found within the human form. Lastly\, the motifs found within Shai Yehezkelli’s paintings—figures\, plants\, pots— help solidify our desire for the domestic to preserve elements of our humanity. This exhibition is on view through November 23\, 2019. This Event is Free & Open to the Public.\nImage: Nicole Cherubini\, Future Perfect
