Free & Open to the Public / RSVP HERE. \nThe Miami Dade College Hialeah Campus Art Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition Vulnerable Maps (2025)\, featuring works by E. Martin Fierro (Santa Cruz de Tenerife\, Spain\, 1965) and J.M. Pozo (Holguín\, Cuba\, 1967). This exhibition\, supported and coordinated with the  (CCE Miami) Centro Cultural Español\, includes recent works in painting\, drawing\, and installation\, highlighting the pictorial and discursive affinities shared by these artists. The exhibition will be part of the program of exhibitions and cultural art events for the XI International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art\, which will take place in Miami from March 6 to 29. \nIn Vulnerable Maps\, E. Martin Fierro and J.M. Pozo reflect on history\, memory\, and recollection\, exploring their relationship with the concepts of borders\, frontiers\, and limits\, approached with a sensitivity that plays with the personal biography of each artist. \nCurated by Dennys Matos and directed by Noor Blazekovic\, Vulnerable Maps emphasizes how the works of both Martin Fierro and Pozo generate imagery through the overlapping of different layers of content. Décollage\, as a break or tear that deepens the thickness of one pictorial image over another\, is an important reference in their respective works. But also\, part of their expressive repertoire are the hybridizations between painting and photography\, revealing transparencies of materials and essential objects in the construction of meaning. Their discourse focuses on the relationship between history and memory\, reinterpreting the displacements that imply\, in the circumstances of the global village\, concepts such as borders\, frontiers\, limits\, and the sociocultural resonance of their representation in the languages of contemporary art. \n  \n

It brings together a diverse array of perspectives\, highlighting the intricate balance women navigate as they pursue their dreams while often shouldering the weight of societal expectations and familial responsibilities. \nThrough various media\, the participating artists delve into themes such as the sacrifices women make to achieve their goals\, the often-unacknowledged labor of motherhood\, and the juggling of multifaceted roles as wives\, mothers\, and professionals. Each artwork invites viewers to reflect on the emotional and psychological toll that these sacrifices can exact\, while simultaneously celebrating the strength and tenacity that define the driven woman. “The Driven Woman” is not merely a celebration of achievement but an acknowledgment of the sacrifices that often remain unseen. It aims to foster a dialogue about the realities faced by women who strive to break barriers while fulfilling their roles within their families and communities and honors the driven women whose stories and struggles resonate across generations and cultures. \n  \nIMAGE: KX2\, ‘Obstruction II’\, 2021. KX2 is a collaboration between Ruth Avra and Dana Kleinman\, sisters and artists whose practice revolves around the fusion of metalwork and painting. Their artwork delves specifically into the domain of data research\, with a particular emphasis on climate change and water infrastructure\, in order to illuminate pressing environmental concerns.

This showcase of four airbrushed acrylic works—abstract yet evocative—stand as the surviving fragments of an intense creative process\, remnants of an attempt to distill the ineffable. Here\, the artist functions as both alchemist and medium\, transforming a turbulent inner landscape into an atmospheric brew of earthy tones and spectral imagery. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST: Carlos is a Venezuelan-American artist based in South Florida\, inspired by the realism of the Old Masters and the surreal worlds of Max Ernst and H.R. Giger. Initially studying anthropology\, he shifted to graphic design and illustration\, earning a scholarship to study in Pittsburgh after training in Caracas. In Venezuela\, he worked as a freelance artist and educator\, gaining critical recognition before relocating to the U.S. due to political turmoil. Now a resident artist at The Studio 18 Art Complex in Pembroke Pines\, Carlos continues to exhibit his work\, exploring the intersections of reality and imagination.

The work explores the symbolic complexity of liminal spaces\, investigating the myriad forms and possibilities they present. As Joe navigates through various unfamiliar realms and unstable surreal elements\, he embarks on an ongoing quest for identity and purpose. \nThe series\, which consists of a prologue (MENDA City Dreaming) and three chapters (MENDA City\, UNI\, DAGON)\, unfolds across different dimensions—dream\, reality\, and surreality—each accessible through various forms of portals. The creatures and elements Joe encounters serve as metaphors for unforgettable experiences and emotions. Additionally\, the accompanying animation illustrates a key moment in the narrative\, where the protagonist undergoes separation\, transition\, and integration\, symbolizing the cognitive ambiguity and identity anxiety inherent in his journey. The long-scroll oil painting (prints) Rat Race similarly uses distorted and shifting spaces\, along with the protagonist’s detachment from his surroundings\, to represent the suspended\, in-between nature of liminal space. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nZuyi Jin is a Chinese painter and illustrator whose work explores contemporary issues such as the liminality of immigrant experiences\, the instability of shifting environments\, and emotional transitions. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Oil Painting from Capital Normal University in 2022. Currently\, Jin is pursuing an MFA in Illustration at the University of Miami\, where he also holds a full teaching assistantship.
