SUMMARY:The University of Miami presents Eat Me\, an exhibition by Master of Fine Arts candidate Júlia Galvão Ramos
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 10th from 6 – 9pm The University of Miami presents Eat Me\, an exhibition by Master of Fine Arts candidate Júlia Galvão Ramos. Come celebrate a special reception with the artist! \n“Eat Me” came from the idea that the female body is something to be consumed and enjoyed\, and explores the complications that arise from being perceived that way as a woman. The title references the term “cheesecake\,” which was used in the past to describe pin-up imagery intended for the male gaze. \nAfter being compared to a “cheesecake\,” Júlia found the term troubling especially in a contemporary context\, yet recognized that women are still often viewed through that lens. In response\, she incorporates imagery from 1950s gentlemen’s magazines into her work. The exhibition features a range of mixed media pieces as well as artist books created by Júlia. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nJúlia Galvão Ramos was born in São Paulo\, Brazil. She moved to the United States at the age of 16 to attend boarding school in Broward County. In 2022\, she received her BFA with a focus on printmaking and a minor in art history from Ringling College of Art and Design. Her work explores her experiences as a woman and the challenges of navigating the various ways she is perceived by others. \nEat Me is on view until May 16\, 2025\, at the University of Miami Gallery\, Wynwood Building\, 2750 NW 3rd Ave\, Suite 4\, Miami\, FL 33127. Open Wed-Fri\, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.\, or by appointment. Call (305) 284-3161 to confirm. \nFor information about the gallery and online offerings\, please contact Milly Cardoso\, Gallery Manager and Curator\, m.cardoso1@miami.edu.
