DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 9th from 7-9pm join Locust Projects and Oolite Arts for a conversation at the Little Haiti Cultural Center with Paul Schimmel\, independent curator and art historian of contemporary art\, formerly the Chief Curator for 9 years at the Newport Harbor Art Museum (now the Orange County Museum of Art)\, Chief Curator for 22 years at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA)\, Los Angeles\, and Founding Partner of Hauser Wirth & Schimmel.\nPaul has organized and written the catalogue for the exhibition\, Sigmar Polke Photoworks: When Pictures Vanish\, and contributed to the catalogue of Bruce Nauman’s comprehensive MoMA retrospective in 1995. Most recently\, he wrote for the Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuittion as well as a Kazuo Shiraga exhibition at the Amagasaki City Culture Promotion Foundation.\nNotable themed exhibitions include: Revolution in the Making\, 1947-2016; Destroy the Picture: Painting the Void\, 1949-1962; Under the Big Black Sun: California Art 1974-1981; Ecstasy: In and About Altered States; Out of Actions: Between Performance and the Object\, 1949-1979; Helter Skelter: Los Angeles Art in the 1990s; and The Interpretive Link: Abstract Surrealism into Abstract Expressionism\, Works on Paper 1938-48. Inspired by the sculpture of El-Salahi’s Meditation Tree\, participants will create a personal tree sculpture embedding it with imagery of their life journey.\nCreativity Exploration workshops promote the benefits of creative exploration and the mind to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being\, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms\, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 13th at 11am Fabien Castanier Gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition for American artist Mark Jenkins\, From Here to Nowhere. The show will be held in both gallery locations\, beginning with the Progressive Art Brunch event in Little Haiti on Sunday October 13th and continuing with a subsequent opening reception in Wynwood on Saturday October 19th. This will be the second solo exhibition for the artist at the gallery\, enjoy the Opening Reception with the Artist.\nWith biting wit and an eye for the absurd\, Mark Jenkins presents a new series of provocative sculptures for his latest solo exhibition. Each piece conveys a larger story\, whether a commentary on society or a critique of contemporary culture\, the only true meaning behind each tableau is interpreted through the viewers’ perspective – unique and often variable to the individual. This interaction between the audience and artwork continues to drive the “performance” aspect of his hyper-realistic figures\, and for the first time ever\, he has created a truly interactive and immersive experience for his audience. In the gallery’s Little Haiti space\, From Here to Nowhere will feature a performative installation entitled “Nucleus”\, which will allow viewers to interact and “play” with the artist’s sculptures.
