SUMMARY:Deering Estate presents Material Nature: Julie Davidow & Alex Nuñez
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 2nd from 6-9pm enjoy the Opening Reception of Material Nature at Deering Estate featuring works by artists Julie Davidow & Alex Nuñez. Material Nature features the work of two Miami-based painters whose works employ the textures\, rhythms and patterns found in nature. Immersed in the flora and fauna of South Florida\, these paintings reflect the indexical relationships to natural areas that surround them. Emerging from her residency at the Deering Estate\, Alex Nuñez’s large scale abstract paintings are a mediation on her research and experience of the site’s natural areas. In Feeding Frenzy\, colors and forms appear to vibrate off the canvas like the ripples and swirls she observes in the Deering Estate’s bay vistas. Julie Davidow’s paintings employ a balance of geometric abstraction and biomorphic design. Hard edges meet with sinuous lines and blur the line between material processes and natural processes. The exhibition further connects the legacies of the Deering Estate as a natural preserve and important site for botany and ecology with contemporary art. In addition to the paintings will be archival materials relating to the early explorations of botanist John Kunkel Small during his research trips to the Deering Estate.\nThe exhibition is on view in the ballroom through January 15\, 2020. Her work concentrates on the amalgamation of pop culture and personal image hoarding with explosions of color\, texture and sheen. Nuñez’s work either begins with a found image/ object or the image is incorporated into an existing painting. Tropical and hypnotic mark making envelop the source material. These works become immersive environments that play on memory\, erosion\, overindulgence\, disorientation\, humor\, vanity\, narcissism and opulence.

The show will be held in both gallery locations\, beginning with the Progressive Art Brunch event in Little Haiti on Sunday October 13th and continuing with a subsequent opening reception in Wynwood on Saturday October 19th. This will be the second solo exhibition for the artist at the gallery\, enjoy the Opening Reception with the Artist.\nWith biting wit and an eye for the absurd\, Mark Jenkins presents a new series of provocative sculptures for his latest solo exhibition. Each piece conveys a larger story\, whether a commentary on society or a critique of contemporary culture\, the only true meaning behind each tableau is interpreted through the viewers’ perspective – unique and often variable to the individual. This interaction between the audience and artwork continues to drive the “performance” aspect of his hyper-realistic figures\, and for the first time ever\, he has created a truly interactive and immersive experience for his audience. In the gallery’s Little Haiti space\, From Here to Nowhere will feature a performative installation entitled “Nucleus”\, which will allow viewers to interact and “play” with the artist’s sculptures.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 23rd from 7-9pm experience an Art Talk at the Sagamore on Miami Beach featuring two of the artists behind the current Remix exhibition\, Robert Leone and Teepop. Guests will enjoy an intimate art encounter at the Sagamore\, the iconic “Art Hotel” on Miami Beach — hosted by Sebastien Laboureau\, Resident Art Advisor of Sagamore Hotel and Curator of the Remix exhibit.\nRemix is an art exhibit entirely dedicated to music encompassing all media\, including sculpture\, photography\, paintings and mixed media. This art exhibit\, curated by Sebastien Laboureau\, resident art and music advisor to the Sagamore Hotel\, showcases over 100 artworks from artists coming from all over the world illustrating how music is deeply impacting our everyday lives. Visual art and music have long shared a natural connection. Their relationship is explored through the interaction of balance\, form\, style\, design\, harmony\, and emotion. The Remix exhibition explores the enduring influence music and celebrated musicians has on contemporary art practices. GeoVanna was born and raised in Los Angeles California where she received her BFA at Otis College of Art and Design.\nLocal Views at PAMM gives visitors a first-hand interaction with local artists by creating conversations centered around art and the creative process. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 24th from 7 – 9pm enjoy the opening reception of two new exhibitions at the Lowe Art Museum | University of Miami.\nDiago: The Pasts of this Afro Cuban Present (October 24\, 2019 – January 19\, 2020)\nA leading member of the New Afro-Cuban cultural movement\, visual artists Juan Roberto Diago (b. 1971) has produced a body of work that offers a revisionist history of the Cuban Nation. Featuring forty works produced by Diago over the course of his career\, this exhibition was guest curated by Dr. Alejandro de la Fuente (Robert Woods Bliss Professor of Latin American History and Economics\, Professor of African and African American Studies\, Director of the Afro-Latin American Research Institute at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research\, and Chair of the Cuba Studies Program at Harvard University) and is presented in collaboration with the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (Miami MoCAAD).\nCarlos Estévez: Cities of the Mind (October 24\, 2019 – May 3\, 2020)\nThe most recent project of renowned Cuban-American artist Carlos Estévez\, Cities of the Mind features nine large-format paintings that reference the artist’s fascination with city plans. Inspired by the Havana of his youth\, the Medieval European cities to which he has traveled extensively as an adult\, and his abiding interest in symbolic cosmology and origin stories\, Estévez has created in this body of new work personal maps of the human mind influenced by ancient cartography. SUMMARY:Storefront Art Studio: 'Ideal Situation' Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 24th from 7-10pm Storefront Art Studio is pleased to present IDEAL SITUATION\, a dual exhibition of Brian Gefen and Jill C. Weisberg. This collaboration is a culmination of current social and political situations. Using vintage printed materials\, pop-culture iconography and a vibrant color palette\, Gefen and Weisberg communicate their views in different ways both using a mixed-media approach. Gefen uses pop culture to illustrate how society puts priorities on entertainment\, not factual information. Weisberg’s intention is to show how feminism has been commodified for profit by using advertisements from vintage women’s magazines.\nBoth artists’ work are a treat for the eyes\, encouraging the viewer to look deeper into the works and find meaning. The exhibition runs from October 19th through December 22nd\, 2019. This Event is Free & Open to the Public.\n  \nStorefront Art Studio is an exhibition space in the heart of Downtown Hollywood\, Florida and the working studios of local artists Jill Weisberg and Brian Gefen. It is a dedicated site for artists and creatives to showcase their work in an environment that melds seamlessly with the traditional architecture of Downtown Hollywood\, while also being a rallying point for cultural events and vibrant social interaction.\nThe two open platforms that flank the entrance to Storefront are exhibition walls that can be viewed 24 hours a day\, seven days a week.
