Hosted by Resident Historian\, Dr. Paul George\, each conversation will explore a different topic centered on the diverse stories of our local communities. Join Dr. Joanne Hyppolite\, Curator at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC)\, in conversation with Resident Historian Dr. Paul George as they delve into the history and culture of the Black Diaspora in South Florida. SUMMARY:Coral Gables Museum presents PURSEonality: A Stylish Handbag History
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, September 15th from 5 – 7:45pm enjoy the opening of PURSEonality: A Stylish Handbag History at the Coral Gables Museum. This exhibition encompasses highlights from the personal collection of Ilene Hochberg Wood. The handbags range in style from folk art\, to contemporary designer\, to embroidered\, and numbers into the thousands\, making it the largest collection in the U.S.\, if not the world. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a timeline of the handbag\, representing the trends of each decade. They will experience a selection of handbag superlatives featuring the most rare\, unusual and expensive purses acquired by Wood in her decades of collecting. Also included in the show is the series BAG LUNCH with Ilene Hochberg Wood\, a collection of short videos where Wood abounds on the history and anecdotes on specific pieces.\nThe display at the Coral Gables Museum will explore themes including Most Royal\, Most Talkative\, The Legends and The New Kids. The artist bag section will spotlight bags that are hand-decorated or inspired by famous artworks. This exhibition will be on view September 15\, 2020 – January 7\, 2021 in the Abraham R. Family Gallery & Gallery 109.\nThis show was conceived through a partnership between Wood and Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites\, Pennsylvania\, where it premiered. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 25th from 6-9pm join the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood for their 12th Annual EXPOSED Exhibition & Fundraiser. Exposed turns art patrons into art buyers during a fun and exciting fund-raising event in which every ticket holder goes home with an original work of art. Exposed will feature more than 80 contemporary artists in an exhibition that culminates with a closing-night draw that never fails to produce an adrenaline rush. Names are drawn one-by-one and when your name is called you choose any work of art that has not yet been selected. Everyone is a winner at this one-of-a-kind art event. Draw will take place at 8pm. Buy Your Tickets Here!\nFor the 12th edition of this popular exhibition and fund-raiser\, the Center will give ticket buyers to the live\, closing-night draw two options for selecting their artwork – in person in the Center’s Main Gallery or they can have a designated Center staff member pick their artwork by proxy while watching the event online. For details on how proxies work\, call (954)921-3274. Funds raised at Exposed will support the Center’s year-round calendar of gallery exhibitions and events. This is a great way to support the Center at this challenging time and get new artwork for your collection. DESCRIPTION:September 30th at 12noon Miami Dade College’s Cuban Legacy Gallery at the historic Freedom Tower opens their newest exhibition\, Remaking Miami: Josefina Tarafa’s Photographs of the 1970s. The exhibit presents images by the photographer\, editor\, and philanthropist that pictures the transformation of our city by the arrival of Tarafa’s fellow Cuban immigrants. Tarafa’s exceptional photographic work unites an inventive formal sensibility\, a documentary and anthropological drive\, and a keen eye for the revelatory detail.
