This Event is Free & Open to the Public\, RSVP HERE. \nInspired by the life of Purvis Young (1943–2010) the self-taught artist whose work chronicled the people\, struggles and spirit of Miami’s Overtown neighborhood in his paintings\, Othello of Overtown explores Young’s artistic journey\, his relationship with community\, and the tensions between creative expression and the commercial art world. \nA special preview of the new production is happening during July\, the monthly First Free Thursday at NSU Art Museum\, many events are free and open to the public including this matinee performance in the Norma and William Horvitz Auditorium. \nThe play was written by Miami-born playwright\, director and actor Sefanja Richard Galon. The director is Carey Brianna Hart\, a New World School of the Arts and Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University graduate whose South Florida theater work spans stage\, backstage\, directing and radio arts and President of the South Florida Theatre League. \nEnjoy lunch and a coffee in the cafe and join us for the reading of about one hour with a conversation with the playwright\, director and cast afterwards.

Create a meaningful\, decorative textile wall hanging with internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist Cheryl Pope. \nIn this two-day workshop\, explore the special exhibition\, Get in the Game: Sports\, Art\, Culture\, to discover how artists use traditional sports banners\, pennants\, flags\, and fashion to express powerful ideas—including Pope’s own letter jacket artwork. These artworks will inspire the creation of our own stitched statements. \nIn the studio\, we’ll reflect on language and writing before designing and preparing felt lettering on banner backings. Using simple appliqué and hand-stitching techniques\, we’ll bring our words to life. The result—bold\, meaningful banners with motivational messages about everyday life\, personal reflections\, social justice\, or simply for fun! \n  \nThis workshop is for participants ages 14+. This free summer fine art exhibit exploring Florida’s evolving natural and urban landscapes will feature works by award-winning artist Tim Forman and photographer David Paulo plus contextual historical maps of our timeless state. On view from July 9 through September 13\, 2026. \nA free meet and greet with the artists will take place on Thursday\, July 9\, from 6 – 8 p.m.\, at the New River Inn Museum of History building on History Fort Lauderdale’s campus (231 Southwest Second Avenue). Complimentary light bites and beverages will be provided. \nVisitors to History Fort Lauderdale’s “Timeless Tropics: Florida’s Changing Landscape” will experience Tim Forman’s artfully curated oil on canvas masterworks of the Florida Everglades\, waterscapes\, beachscapes and natural wildlife. These landscapes are complemented by David Paulo’s bold photographic narrative of buildings and neighborhoods in South Florida that are significant to culture and life of minority communities. Documented cities include Sistrunk\, Lauderhill\, and Dania Beach. This passion led him to study painting and sculpture in college\, where he earned his BFA. After graduating\, he quickly learned that making a living as an artist was not a viable option\, so he followed his other passion – being a psychotherapist. Being a therapist for more than thirty years has informed Allen’s work. He strives to portray the way that life’s joyful and painful experiences affect facial features and expressions. Allen uses his work a way to connect to his emotions\, and he hopes that it will have the same effect others. \nRecommitting to the vibrant programming that first brought acclaim\, Wilton Art Works will feature an outstanding rotation of Guest Artists every two weeks on its dedicated Guest Artist Wall. This observation became the inspiration for This Is Me. \nThrough his artwork\, Ferrara explores what it means to be fully seen and fully present. His figures suggest identities that are still emerging\, inviting viewers to reflect on their own sense of self and the ways in which modern life can leave us feeling fragmented or unfinished. \nFerrara studied art and art history at Philadelphia College before pursuing cosmetology\, where he found another artistic outlet through color\, form\, and personal expression. Now\, as he transitions from a distinguished career in the hair industry\, he returns to his first passion—creating fine art. The gallery presents Anthony Ferrara’s latest body of work\, enjoy an Artist Talk where the artist will share insights into his creative process and the ideas behind the exhibition. This Event is Free & Open the Public | RSVP HERE. \nFor the past 45 years\, Anthony Ferrara has worked as a colorist and stylist\, building a career rooted in creativity\, observation\, and transformation. Throughout those years\, he became increasingly aware that many people seem less present in their own lives—as though parts of themselves remain hidden\, incomplete\, or still taking shape. This observation became the inspiration for This Is Me. \nThrough his artwork\, Ferrara explores what it means to be fully seen and fully present. His figures suggest identities that are still emerging\, inviting viewers to reflect on their own sense of self and the ways in which modern life can leave us feeling fragmented or unfinished. \nFerrara studied art and art history at Philadelphia College before pursuing cosmetology\, where he found another artistic outlet through color\, form\, and personal expression. Now\, as he transitions from a distinguished career in the hair industry\, he returns to his first passion—creating fine art. This Is Me marks both a personal homecoming and an exploration of the universal search for authenticity\, presence\, and wholeness. \n

SUMMARY:MOAD Talks- Miami as Archive: Memory\, Place\, and the Legacy of Purvis Young
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 30th from 6:30 – 8pm join the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC Freedom Tower for a discussion centered on the works of Purvis Young as a lens through which to consider broader questions of artistic legacy. This Event is Free & Open to the Public\, RSVP HERE. \nThis MOAD Talks panel brings together three South Florida cultural practitioners: Tayina Deravile\, Cultural Arts Practitioner\, Independent Curator\, and Gallery Manager at Girls’ Club; Barbara Young\, Art Librarian\, Curator\, and Art Services Supervisor for the Miami-Dade Public Library System\, as well as Co-founder of the Vasari Project; and Terrence Cribbs-Lórrant\, Executive Director and Cultural Curator of the Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum. Through exhibition-making and public programming centered on the archives of Purvis Young\, each panelist has engaged Young’s work as a lens through which to consider broader questions of artistic legacy\, memory\, and archival practice in Miami. \nThis panel will examine their distinct cultural frameworks and consider how artist legacies shape and are shaped by archival practices in the city. In doing so\, the discussion highlights how their perspectives illuminate different dimensions of Young’s practice. The conversation will explore which aspects of Young’s visual language\, material choices\, and thematic concerns informed their creative processes. It will also reflect on how his work offers a lens for understanding memory\, place\, and archives in Miami\, as well as how his practice occupied and transformed space within South Florida art contexts. \nCollectively\, the panel situates Young’s legacy within Miami’s evolving art historical canon\, foregrounding his continued relevance to the city’s cultural and social landscape. \nBy engaging these voices\, the program invites audiences to encounter Young’s practice through layered perspectives\, revealing the many ways his work speaks to Miami’s histories of migration\, resilience\, spirituality\, race\, and urban change. \n  \nImage: Purvis Young\, Group of Figures.
