Miami’s de la Cruz Collection Showcases Art Exhibit at Nova Southeastern University

Renown throughout South Florida and the international art scene, Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz will present ‘Selections from the de la Cruz Collection’ at the Adolfo and Marisela Cotilla Gallery inside Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Alvin Sherman Library. The exhibit will be free and open to the public on March 25 and will run through May 4, 2015 at the Nova Southeastern University Main Campus located at 3301 College Avenue in Davie, FL 33301.

This exhibition is the first in a series curated and organized by the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space to benefit the students and community of Nova Southeastern University. Throughout the development of their relationship with NSU, Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz have acknowledged and expressed their passion for art and education by sharing their collection with the NSU community and all those who visit the campus. ‘Selections from the de la Cruz Collection’ showcases a group of female artists who are at the forefront of American painting and sculpture. Contemporary perspectives on monumentality, ownership and portraiture are explored in these works.

Through a humorous filter, personal experiences are translated through art historical practices with a fresh approach.  Artists featured in the exhibition are Kathryn Andrews, Rachel Harrison and Dana Schutz. Additionally, a site-specific work by Polish artist Paulina Olowska will be installed in the atrium of the library for the duration of the exhibition. “We are absolutely honored and thrilled that the de la Cruz’s have chosen Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library to highlight some of the beautiful works from their collection,” said Lydia Acosta, vice president for Information Services and university librarian.

Completed in 2009, the de la Cruz’s have created a full-fledged museum in Miami’s Design District, with the intent to make their collection accessible to their local community and visitors of the Miami area. This year, they established a lending program in an effort to further expand their educational initiatives by allowing the collection to travel beyond the walls of the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space. “Through our collaboration with Nova Southeastern University, we feel that expanding our lending program to benefit students will make the collection an invaluable educational resource and redefine how students continue to learn from its history,” said Ibett Yanez, director of the de la Cruz Collection.
